Zooplankton as indicators in lakes: a scientific-based plea for including zooplankton in the ecological quality assessment of lakes according to the European Water Framework Directive (WFD)
Erik Jeppesen,Peeter Nõges,Thomas Davidson,Thomas Davidson,Juta Haberman,Tiina Nõges,Kätlin Blank,Torben L. Lauridsen,Martin Søndergaard,Carl D. Sayer,Reet Laugaste,Liselotte S. Johansson,Rikke Bjerring,Susanne L. Amsinck +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that zooplankton (sampled from the water and the sediment) have a strong indicator value, which cannot be covered by sampling fish and phytoplankston without a very comprehensive and costly effort.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: This is the first global quantitative synthesis on under-ice lake ecology, including 36 abiotic and biotic variables from 42 research groups and 101 lakes, examining seasonal differences and connections as well as how seasonal differences vary with geophysical factors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Indices of zooplankton community as valuable tools in assessing the trophic state and water quality of eutrophic lakes: long term study of Lake Võrtsjärv
Juta Haberman,Marina Haldna +1 more
TL;DR: The results of this study show that several zooplankton parameters are among the biological quality elements (BQE) deserving to be included in the Water Frame Directive system.
Journal ArticleDOI
Contribution of different zooplankton groups in grazing on phytoplankton in shallow eutrophic Lake Võrtsjärv (Estonia)
TL;DR: Among size classes of ‘edible’ phytoplankton, the size range 5–15 μm was the most important algal food for the dominant zooplankon grazers (herbivorous ciliates, Polyarthra spp., Chydorus sphaericus and Daphnia cucullata) in L. Vortsjarv.
Journal ArticleDOI
Factors controlling the three-decade long rise in cyanobacteria biomass in a eutrophic shallow lake.
TL;DR: The results suggest that the decadal rise of blue-green algae in shallow lakes lies in the interaction between cultural eutrophication and global warming which bring in-lake physical and chemical conditions closer to cyanobacteria optima.
