Journal ArticleDOI
Photorhabdus insect-related (Pir) toxin-like genes in a plasmid of Vibrio parahaemolyticus, the causative agent of acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) of shrimp.
TL;DR: A duplex PCR diagnostic method, with a detection limit of 10(5) CFU ml(-1), can reliably detect AHPND-causing strains of V. parahaemolyticus and does not cross react with non-pathogenic strains or with other species of Vibrio isolated from shrimp ponds.
Journal ArticleDOI
Historic emergence, impact and current status of shrimp pathogens in the Americas.
Donald V. Lightner,Rita M. Redman,Carlos R. Pantoja,Kathy F.J. Tang,Brenda Noble,Paul J. Schofield,Leone L. Mohney,Linda M. Nunan,Solangel A. Navarro +8 more
TL;DR: The industry now relies on domesticated lines of broodstock that have undergone selection for desirable characteristics including disease resistance, and WSD is the dominant disease problem of farmed shrimp in the Americas.
Journal ArticleDOI
Purification and characterization of infectious myonecrosis virus of penaeid shrimp.
TL;DR: The causative agent of myonecrosis affecting cultured Penaeus vannamei in Brazil was demonstrated to be a virus after purification of the agent from infected shrimp tissues, and may represent a new dsRNA virus family that infects invertebrate hosts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Aquaculture genomics, genetics and breeding in the United States: current status, challenges, and priorities for future research

TL;DR: A general review of the current status, challenges and future research needs of aquaculture genomics, genetics, and breeding is provided, with a focus on major Aquaculture species in the United States: catfish, rainbow trout, Atlantic salmon, tilapia, striped bass, oysters, and shrimp.
Journal ArticleDOI
Development of in situ hybridization and PCR assays for the detection of Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP), a microsporidian parasite infecting penaeid shrimp.
TL;DR: A PCR assay from this 18S rRNA gene region is shown to be specific to EHP, did not react to 2 other parasitic pathogens, an amoeba and the cotton shrimp disease microsporidium, nor to genomic DNA of various crustaceans including polychaetes, squids, crabs and krill.
