Identification of plasmids by PCR-based replicon typing
Alessandra Carattoli,Alessia Bertini,Laura Villa,Vincenzo Falbo,Katie L. Hopkins,E. John Threlfall +5 more
TL;DR: Results indicated that the inc/rep PCR method demonstrates high specificity and sensitivity in detecting replicons on reference plasmids and also revealed the presence of recurrent and common plasmid in epidemiologically unrelated Salmonella isolates of different serotypes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mechanisms of quinolone resistance in Escherichia coli and Salmonella: Recent developments
TL;DR: Care needs to taken to avoid overuse of this important class of antimicrobial in both human and veterinary medicine to prevent an increase in the occurrence of resistant zoonotic and non-zoonotic bacterial pathogens that could subsequently cause human or animal infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Occurrence of carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli in the European survey of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (EuSCAPE): a prospective, multinational study.

Hopkins,Camilla Wiuff,Derek J. Brown +94 more
TL;DR: The development of a consistent sampling framework and the results of the first structured survey on the occurrence of carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli in European hospitals are reported.
Journal ArticleDOI
The role of whole genome sequencing in antimicrobial susceptibility testing of bacteria : report from the EUCAST Subcommittee
Matthew J. Ellington,Oskar Ekelund,Frank Møller Aarestrup,Rafael Cantón,Michel Doumith,Christian G. Giske,H. Grundman,Henrik Hasman,Matthew T. G. Holden,Katie L. Hopkins,J. TL;DR: The European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing established a subcommittee to review the current development status of Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) for bacterial antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Detection of the plasmid-mediated mcr-1 gene conferring colistin resistance in human and food isolates of Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli in England and Wales
Michel Doumith,Gauri Godbole,Philip Ashton,Lesley Larkin,Timothy J. Dallman,Martin Day,Michaela Day,Berit Muller-Pebody,Matthew J. Ellington,Elizabeth de Pinna,Alan P. Johnson,Katie L. Hopkins,Neil Woodford +12 more
TL;DR: Analysis of WGS data allowed rapid confirmation of the presence of the plasmid-mediated colistin resistance gene mcr-1 in diverse genetic environments and plasmids.
