Journal ArticleDOI
Carbon lock-in through capital stock inertia associated with weak near-term climate policies
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore how policies pursued during the next two decades impact long-term transformation pathways towards stringent longterm climate targets using nine energy-economy models and find that less stringent near-term policies consume more of the longterm cumulative emissions budget in the 2010-2030 period, which increases the likelihood of overshoot the budget and the urgency of reducing GHG emissions after 2030.
Journal ArticleDOI
2°C and SDGs: united they stand, divided they fall?
Christoph von Stechow,Christoph von Stechow,Jan C. Minx,Jan C. Minx,Keywan Riahi,Keywan Riahi,Jessica Jewell,David L. McCollum,Max Callaghan,Christoph Bertram,Gunnar Luderer,Giovanni Baiocchi +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the synergies and risk trade-offs of alternative 2 °C pathways across indicators relevant for energy-related SDGs and sustainable energy objectives and found that limiting the availability of key mitigation technologies yields some co-benefits and decreases risks specific to these technologies but greatly increases many others.
Book ChapterDOI
Energy Pathways for Sustainable Development
Keywan Riahi,F. J. Dentener,Dolf Gielen,Arnulf Grubler,Jessica Jewell,Zbigniew Klimont,Volker Krey,David L. McCollum,Shonali Pachauri,Shilpa Rao,B. van Ruijven,D.P. van Vuuren,Charlie Wilson +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore possible transformational pathways of the future global energy system with the overarching goal of assessing the technological feasibility as well as the economic implications of meeting a range of sustainability objectives simultaneously.
Journal ArticleDOI
What does the 2 c target imply for a global climate agreement in 2020? the limits study on durban platform scenarios
Elmar Kriegler,Massimo Tavoni,Tino Aboumahboub,Gunnar Luderer,Katherine Calvin,Gauthier Demaere,Volker Krey,Keywan Riahi,Hilke Rösler,Michiel Schaeffer,Detlef P. van Vuuren,Detlef P. van Vuuren +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, a model-based assessment of possible outcomes of the Durban Platform negotiations with a focus on emissions reduction requirements, the consistency with the 2°C target and global economic impacts is provided.
Journal ArticleDOI
Climate policies can help resolve energy security and air pollution challenges
David L. McCollum,David L. McCollum,Volker Krey,Keywan Riahi,Keywan Riahi,Peter Kolp,Arnulf Grubler,Arnulf Grubler,Marek Makowski,Marek Makowski,Nebojsa Nakicenovic,Nebojsa Nakicenovic +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors assess three key energy sustainability objectives: energy security improvement, climate change mitigation, and the reduction of air pollution and its human health impacts, and show that stringent climate change policy offers a strategic entry point along the path to energy sustainability.
