Journal ArticleDOI
Phosphorus flows and balances of the European Union Member States.
TL;DR: Although wide-ranging variation between countries, generally phosphorus use in EU-27 was characterized by relatively large dependency on (primary) imports, long-term accumulation in agricultural soils, especially in west European countries, providing ample opportunities for improvement.
Journal ArticleDOI
Phosphorus management in Europe in a changing world.
TL;DR: It is argued that not only the use of P fertilizers and P additives in feed could be reduced by fine-tuning fertilization and feeding to actual nutrient requirements, but also P from waste has to be completely recovered and recycled in order to close the P balance of Europe regionally and become less dependent on the availability of P-rock reserves.
Journal ArticleDOI
Environmental footprint family to address local to planetary sustainability and deliver on the SDGs
D. Vanham,Adrian Leip,Alessandro Galli,Thomas Kastner,Martin Bruckner,Aimable Uwizeye,Kimo van Dijk,Ertug Ercin,Carole Dalin,Miguel Brandão,Simone Bastianoni,Kai Fang,Allison M. Leach,Ashok Chapagain,Marijn van der Velde,Serenella Sala,Rana Pant,Lucia Mancini,Fabio Monforti-Ferrario,Gema Carmona-Garcia,Alexandra Marques,Franz Weiss,Arjen Ysbert Hoekstra +22 more
TL;DR: It is argued that the footprint family is a flexible framework where particular members can be included or excluded according to the context or area of concern, and delivers on measuring progress towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Journal ArticleDOI
Stewardship to tackle global phosphorus inefficiency: The case of Europe.
Paul J. A. Withers,Kimo van Dijk,Tina-Simone Schmid Neset,Thomas Nesme,Oene Oenema,Gitte H. Rubæk,Oscar Schoumans,Bert Smit,Sylvain Pellerin +8 more
TL;DR: A strategic framework of 5R stewardship is outlined to help identify and deliver a range of integrated, cost-effective, and feasible technological innovations to improve P use efficiency in society and reduce Europe’s dependence on P imports.
Journal ArticleDOI
New training to meet the global phosphorus challenge

Stringer,Marc Stutter,Peter H. Verburg,Philipp Wilfert,Paul N. Williams,Geneviève S. Metson +41 more
TL;DR: There is a pressing need to develop a new generation of nutrient sustainability professionals working collectively to implement diverse and interdiciplinary approaches within large scale urban and rural planning, for example, following the UNESCO Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development, to meet the diverse needs of communities and countries.
