Jason Riggio,Andrew P. Jacobson,Luke Dollar,Luke Dollar,Hans Bauer,Matthew S. Becker,Amy Dickman,Paul J. Funston,Rosemary J. Groom,Philipp Henschel,Hans H. de Iongh,Hans H. de Iongh,Laly L. Lichtenfeld,Stuart L. Pimm +13 more
TL;DR: This article defined African savannahs as being those areas that receive between 300 and 1,500mm of rain annually and defined lion areas as places that likely have resident lion populations using high-resolution satellite imagery and human population density data.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evidence-based conservation: predator-proof bomas protect livestock and lions
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated the effectiveness of lion-proof enclosures and found that they were 99.9% successful in preventing nighttime carnivore attacks over 1,790 boma-months.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: It is reported that fenced lion populations attain densities closer to carrying capacity than unfenced populations, however, fenced populations are often maintained above carrying capacity, and most are small.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: In this article, the authors identify six research areas that are key to informing evaluations of barrier fencing initiatives: economics, edge permeability, reserve design, connectivity, ecosystem services and communities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Local Attitudes and Perceptions Toward Large Carnivores in a Human-Dominated Landscape of Northern Tanzania
TL;DR: This paper conducted 300 semi-structured interviews with local people adjacent to Tarangire National Park, northern Tanzania, to determine their attitudes and perceptions toward large carnivores, and analyzed the relationships between attitudes and age, gender, education, occupation, years at residence, income, distance from protected area, livestock owned, livestock lost to predators and knowledge of carnivores.
