Journal ArticleDOI
The size of savannah Africa: a lion’s (Panthera leo) view
Jason Riggio,Andrew P. Jacobson,Luke Dollar,Luke Dollar,Hans Bauer,Matthew S. Becker,Amy Dickman,Paul J. Funston,Rosemary J. Groom,Philipp Henschel,Hans H. de Iongh,Hans H. de Iongh,Laly L. Lichtenfeld,Stuart L. Pimm +13 more
TL;DR: This article defined African savannahs as being those areas that receive between 300 and 1,500mm of rain annually and defined lion areas as places that likely have resident lion populations using high-resolution satellite imagery and human population density data.
Journal ArticleDOI
Conserving large carnivores: dollars and fence

Plumptre,Jonathan Salerno,Kirsten Skinner,Rob Slotow,Etotépé A. Sogbohossou,Ken Stratford,Christiaan W. Winterbach,Hanlie Evelyn Kathleen Winterbach,Stephen Polasky +61 more
TL;DR: This work relates African lion population densities and population trends to contrasting management practices across 42 sites in 11 countries to show that lions in unfenced reserves are highly sensitive to human population density in surrounding communities, and unfenced populations are frequently subjected to density-independent factors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lion (Panthera leo) populations are declining rapidly across Africa, except in intensively managed areas
Hans Bauer,Guillaume Chapron,Kristin Nowell,Philipp Henschel,Paul J. Funston,Luke T. B. Hunter,David W. Macdonald,Craig Packer +7 more
TL;DR: Almost all lion populations that historically exceeded ∼500 individuals are declining, but lion conservation is successful in southern Africa, in part because of the proliferation of reintroduced lions in small, fenced, intensively managed, and funded reserves.
Journal ArticleDOI

Sogbohossou,Alaaeldin Soultan,Emma Stone,Esther van der Meer,Rudie J. van Vuuren,Mary Wykstra,Kim Young-Overton +64 more
TL;DR: This analysis shows dramatic declines of cheetah across its distributional range, supporting an uplisting of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List threat assessment to endangered.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Evolutionary Dynamics of the Lion Panthera leo Revealed by Host and Viral Population Genomics
Agostinho Antunes,Jennifer L. Troyer,Melody E. Roelke,Jill Pecon-Slattery,Craig Packer,Christiaan W. Winterbach,Hanlie Evelyn Kathleen Winterbach,Graham Hemson,Laurence G. Frank,Philip Stander,Ludwig Siefert,Margaret Driciru,Paul J. Funston,Kathy A. Alexander,Katherine C. Prager,Gus Mills,David E. Wildt,M. Bush,Stephen J. O'Brien,Warren E. Johnson +19 more
TL;DR: The lion Panthera leo is one of the world's most charismatic carnivores and one of Africa's key predators as discussed by the authors, and its recent evolutionary history is characterized by patterns of molecular genetic variation in multiple maternal (mtDNA), paternal (Y-chromosome), and biparental nuclear (nDNA) genetic markers.
