Journal ArticleDOI
Placental origins of adverse pregnancy outcomes: potential molecular targets: an Executive Workshop Summary of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
John Ilekis,Ekaterini Tsilou,Susan J. Fisher,Vikki M. Abrahams,Michael J. Soares,James C. Cross,Stacy Zamudio,Nicholas P. Illsley,Leslie Myatt,Christine M. Colvis,Maged M. Costantine,David M. Haas,Yoel Sadovsky,Carl P. Weiner,Erik Rytting,Gene L. Bidwell +15 more
TL;DR: A major theme that developed from the workshop was that the scientific community must change their thinking of the pregnant woman and her fetus as a vulnerable patient population for which drug development should be avoided, but rather be thought of as a deprived population in need of more effective therapeutic interventions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Optimising sample collection for placental research
Graham J. Burton,Neil J. Sebire,Leslie Myatt,Dionne Tannetta,Yan-Ling Wang,Yoel Sadovsky,Anne Cathrine Staff,Christopher W.G. Redman +7 more
TL;DR: An evidence-based and experts' review of the factors surrounding collection that may influence data obtained from the human placenta are provided, particular requirements for specific techniques are outlined, and a protocol for optimal sample collection is proposed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Strategy for Standardization of Preeclampsia Research Study Design
Leslie Myatt,Christopher W.G. Redman,Anne Cathrine Staff,Stefan R. Hansson,Melissa L. Wilson,Hannele Laivuori,Lucilla Poston,James M. Roberts +7 more
TL;DR: A strategy for research to study preeclampsia is presented, which will allow discrimination of such possible subtypes and also allow comparison and perhaps combinations of findings in different studies by standardized data and biosample collection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Preeclampsia: Syndrome or Disease?
Leslie Myatt,James M. Roberts +1 more
TL;DR: The focus on disease mechanisms underlying the hypertension and proteinuria defining preeclampsia has increased knowledge of the pathophysiology yet the authors lack both therapy and predictors, and the contribution of differing disease phenotypes to the syndrome may explain the inability of biomarker studies to identify all preeClampsia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Obesity and Placental Function
Leslie Myatt,Alina Maloyan +1 more
TL;DR: There is increasing evidence that the obese in utero environment may cause epigenetic changes in placenta leading to altered function, and reduced mitochondrial respiration and ATP generation in trophoblast isolated from placentas of obese compared with lean women, suggesting compromised placental function.
