TL;DR: The Xenopus laevis genome is sequenced and it is estimated that the two diploid progenitor species diverged around 34 million years ago and combined to form an allotetraploid around 17–18 Ma, where more than 56% of all genes were retained in two homoeologous copies.

Alternative Splicing and Gene Duplication in the Evolution of the FoxP Gene Subfamily
M. Emília Santos,Alekos Athanasiadis,Alexandre B. Leitão,Alexandre B. Leitão,Louis DuPasquier,Élio Sucena,Élio Sucena +6 more
TL;DR: A new model is established for the structural evolution of this gene class and new previously unsuspected levels of regulation for FoxP1 in the vertebrate system through the integration of experimental and in silico studies of the FoxP gene subfamily across the animal kingdom.
