Journal ArticleDOI
Numerous growth factors, cytokines, and chemokines are secreted by human CD34(+) cells, myeloblasts, erythroblasts, and megakaryoblasts and regulate normal hematopoiesis in an autocrine/paracrine manner.
Marcin Majka,Marcin Majka,Anna Janowska-Wieczorek,Anna Janowska-Wieczorek,Janina Ratajczak,Janina Ratajczak,Karen Ehrenman,Karen Ehrenman,Zbigniew Pietrzkowski,Zbigniew Pietrzkowski,M. Anna Kowalska,M. Anna Kowalska,Alan M. Gewirtz,Alan M. Gewirtz,Stephen G. Emerson,Stephen G. Emerson,Mariusz Z. Ratajczak,Mariusz Z. Ratajczak +17 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that normal human CD34(+) cells and hematopoietic precursors secrete numerous regulatory molecules that form the basis of intercellular cross-talk networks and regulate in an autocrine and/or a paracrine manner the various stages of normal human hematoiesis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Disrupting functional interactions between platelet chemokines inhibits atherosclerosis in hyperlipidemic mice.
Rory R. Koenen,Philipp von Hundelshausen,Irina V. Nesmelova,Alma Zernecke,Elisa A. Liehn,Alisina Sarabi,Birgit K. Kramp,Anna M. Piccinini,Søren R. Paludan,M. Anna Kowalska,Andreas J. Kungl,Tilman M. Hackeng,Kevin H. Mayo,Christian Weber,Christian Weber +14 more
TL;DR: Stable peptide inhibitors are designed that specifically disrupt proinflammatory CCL5-CXCL4 interactions, thereby attenuating monocyte recruitment and reducing atherosclerosis without the aforementioned side effects.
Journal ArticleDOI
Platelet-derived microparticles bind to hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells and enhance their engraftment
Anna Janowska-Wieczorek,Marcin Majka,Jacek Kijowski,Monika Baj-Krzyworzeka,Ryan Reca,A. Robert Turner,Janina Ratajczak,Steven G. Emerson,M. Anna Kowalska,Mariusz Z. Ratajczak +9 more
TL;DR: It was found that PMPs are more numerous on mPB than on BM CD34+ cells, do not affect the clonogenicity of human and murine HSPCs, and increase adhesion of these cells to endothelium and immobilized SDF-1, indicating a new role for PMPs in stem cell transplantation and may have clinical implications for the optimization of transplantations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Coagulation facilitates tumor cell spreading in the pulmonary vasculature during early metastatic colony formation.
Jae Hong Im,Weili Fu,Hui Wang,Sujata K. Bhatia,Daniel A. Hammer,M. Anna Kowalska,Ruth J. Muschel +6 more
TL;DR: This work identifies tumor cell spreading onto the vascular surface as an important component of the metastatic cascade and implicates coagulation in this process.
Journal ArticleDOI
Role of platelet surface PF4 antigenic complexes in heparin-induced thrombocytopenia pathogenesis: diagnostic and therapeutic implications
TL;DR: Therapeutic interventions in this model using high-dose heparin or protamine sulfate support the pathogenic role of surface PF4 antigenic complexes in the etiology of HIT and advances understanding of the pathogenesis of HIT.
