TL;DR: Observations and physical modelling of a rapidly fading electromagnetic transient in the galaxy NGC 4993, which is spatially coincident with GW170817, indicate that neutron-star mergers produce gravitational waves and radioactively powered kilonovae, and are a nucleosynthetic source of the r-process elements.
Journal ArticleDOI
Detection of Circumstellar Material in a Normal Type Ia Supernova
Ferdinando Patat,Poonam Chandra,Roger A. Chevalier,Stephen Justham,Ph. Podsiadlowski,Christian Wolf,Avishay Gal-Yam,Luca Pasquini,Ian A. Crawford,Paolo A. Mazzali,Adalbert W. A. Simon,Massimo Turatto +21 more
TL;DR: The spectroscopic detection of circumstellar material in a normal type Ia supernova explosion indicates that this material was ejected from the progenitor system.
Journal ArticleDOI
A giant outburst two years before the core-collapse of a massive star

TL;DR: It is reported that the peculiar type Ib supernova SN 2006jc is spatially coincident with a bright optical transient that occurred in 2004, andSpectroscopic and photometric monitoring of the supernova leads us to suggest that the progenitor was a carbon-oxygen Wolf–Rayet star embedded within a helium-rich circumstellar medium.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Diversity of Type Ia Supernovae: Evidence for Systematics?
Stefano Benetti,Enrico Cappellaro,Paolo A. Mazzali,Massimo Turatto,G. Altavilla,Filomena Bufano,Nancy Elias-Rosa,Rubina Kotak,Giusto Pignata,Maria Elena Salvo,Vallery Stanishev +10 more
TL;DR: In this paper, photometric and spectroscopic properties of 26 well-observed Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) were analyzed with the aim of exploring SN Ia diversity.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: Observations of two slow-to-fade super-luminous supernovae that show relatively fast rise times and blue colours, which are incompatible with pair-instability models are reported.
