A kilonova as the electromagnetic counterpart to a gravitational-wave source

Stephen J. Smartt, +140 more
- 02 Nov 2017 -
TL;DR: Observations and physical modelling of a rapidly fading electromagnetic transient in the galaxy NGC 4993, which is spatially coincident with GW170817, indicate that neutron-star mergers produce gravitational waves and radioactively powered kilonovae, and are a nucleosynthetic source of the r-process elements.
Journal ArticleDOI

A spectroscopic analysis of a sample of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

TL;DR: In this paper, the spectroscopic characteristics of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) were revisited by analysing a homogeneous sample of 296 NLS 1s at redshift between 0.028 and 0.345, extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-DR7).
Journal ArticleDOI

Luminous red novae: Stellar mergers or giant eruptions

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present extensive datasets for a class of intermediate-luminosity optical transients known as luminous red novae, which show double-peaked light curves, with an initial rapid luminosity rise to a blue peak (at −13 to −15 mag), followed by a longer-duration red peak that sometimes is attenuated, resembling a plateau.
