TL;DR: Observations and physical modelling of a rapidly fading electromagnetic transient in the galaxy NGC 4993, which is spatially coincident with GW170817, indicate that neutron-star mergers produce gravitational waves and radioactively powered kilonovae, and are a nucleosynthetic source of the r-process elements.
Journal ArticleDOI
Three-dimensional delayed-detonation models with nucleosynthesis for Type Ia supernovae
Ivo R. Seitenzahl,F. Ciaraldi-Schoolmann,Friedrich K. Röpke,M. Fink,Wolfgang Hillebrandt,Markus Kromer,Rüdiger Pakmor,Ashley J. Ruiter,Stuart A. Sim,Stefan Taubenberger +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, a suite of fourteen three-dimensional, high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations of delayed-detonation models of Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) explosions is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Double-detonation sub-Chandrasekhar supernovae: can minimum helium shell masses detonate the core?
M. Fink,Friedrich K. Röpke,Wolfgang Hillebrandt,Ivo R. Seitenzahl,Stuart A. Sim,Markus Kromer +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated whether a surface helium detonation is capable of triggering a subsequent detonation in the core even for this limiting case, based on approximate detonation initiation criteria in the literature.
Journal ArticleDOI
NORMAL TYPE Ia SUPERNOVAE FROM VIOLENT MERGERS OF WHITE DWARF BINARIES
Ruediger Pakmor,Markus Kromer,S. Taubenberger,Stuart A. Sim,Friedrich K. Röpke,Wolfgang Hillebrandt +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a simulation of a violent merger of two carbon-oxygen white dwarfs with masses of 0.9 M and 1.1 M was presented, where a well-tested combination of codes was used to study the system.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sub-luminous type Ia supernovae from the mergers of equal-mass white dwarfs with mass ~0.9Msolar
Rüdiger Pakmor,Markus Kromer,Friedrich K. Röpke,Stuart A. Sim,Ashley J. Ruiter,Wolfgang Hillebrandt +5 more
TL;DR: A simulation of the merger of two equal-mass white dwarfs that leads to a sub-luminous explosion, although at the expense of requiring a single common-envelope phase, and component masses of ∼0.9M⊙.
