Do Cryptic Reservoirs Threaten Gambiense-Sleeping Sickness Elimination?
Philippe Büscher,Jean-Mathieu Bart,Marleen Boelaert,Bruno Bucheton,Giuliano Cecchi,Nakul Chitnis,Nakul Chitnis,David Courtin,Luisa M. Figueiredo,José-Ramon Franco,Pascal Grébaut,Epco Hasker,Hamidou Ilboudo,Vincent Jamonneau,Mathurin Koffi,Veerle Lejon,Annette MacLeod,Justin Masumu,Enock Matovu,Raffaele C. Mattioli,Harry Noyes,Albert Picado,Kat S. Rock,Brice Rotureau,Gustave Simo,Sophie Thevenon,Sandra Trindade,Philippe Truc,Nick Van Reet +28 more
TL;DR: It is argued that a better understanding of the contribution of human and putative animal reservoirs to gambiense-HAT epidemiology is mandatory to inform elimination strategies.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Dermis as a Delivery Site of Trypanosoma brucei for Tsetse Flies.
Guy Caljon,Guy Caljon,Nick Van Reet,Carl De Trez,Marjorie Vermeersch,David Perez-Morga,Jan Van Den Abbeele +6 more
TL;DR: Experimental transmission experiments combined with molecular parasite detection in blood fed flies provided evidence that dermal trypanosomes can be acquired from the inoculation site immediately after the initial transmission, and intradermal parasite expansion induces elevated skin surface temperatures.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bioluminescent imaging of Trypanosoma brucei shows preferential testis dissemination which may hamper drug efficacy in sleeping sickness.
Filip Claes,Filip Claes,Suman K. Vodnala,Nick Van Reet,Nathalie Boucher,Hilda Lunden-Miguel,Théo Baltz,Bruno Goddeeris,Philippe Büscher,Martin E. Rottenberg +9 more
TL;DR: Monomorphic and pleomorphic recombinant Trypanosoma brucei expressing the Renilla luciferase were generated and it was shown that parasites located in the testis, as compared to those located inThe abdominal cavity, were not readily cleared by the drugs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Murine Models for Trypanosoma brucei gambiense disease progression--from silent to chronic infections and early brain tropism.
C. Giroud,Florence Ottones,Virginie Coustou,Denis Dacheux,Nicolas Biteau,Benjamin Miezan,Nick Van Reet,Mark Carrington,Felix Doua,Théo Baltz +9 more
TL;DR: Experimental murine infections of human African trypanosomiasis caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense showed that these isolates could be clustered into three groups with different characteristics regarding their in vivo infection properties, immune response and capacity for brain invasion, mimicking the broad clinical diversity observed in HAT.
Journal ArticleDOI
Equine trypanosomosis: enigmas and diagnostic challenges.
Philippe Büscher,Mary Isabel Gonzatti,Laurent Hébert,Noboru Inoue,Ilaria Pascucci,Achim Schnaufer,Keisuke Suganuma,Louis Touratier,Nick Van Reet +8 more
TL;DR: To address the limitations of the current diagnostics for equine trypanosomosis, studies into improved molecular and serological tests with the highest possible sensitivity and specificity are recommended.
