Journal ArticleDOI
Systems biological assessment of immunity to mild versus severe COVID-19 infection in humans.
Prabhu S. Arunachalam,Florian Wimmers,Chris Ka Pun Mok,Ranawaka A.P.M. Perera,Madeleine K D Scott,Thomas Hagan,Natalia Sigal,Yupeng Feng,Laurel Bristow,Owen Tak-Yin Tsang,Dhananjay Wagh,John A. Coller,Kathryn L. Pellegrini,Dmitri Kazmin,Ghina Alaaeddine,Wai Shing Leung,Jacky Man Chun Chan,Thomas Shiu Hong Chik,Chris Yau Chung Choi,Christopher Huerta,Michele Paine McCullough,Huibin Lv,Evan J. Anderson,Srilatha Edupuganti,Amit A. Upadhyay,Steve E. Bosinger,Steve E. Bosinger,Holden T. Maecker,Purvesh Khatri,Nadine Rouphael,Malik Peiris,Bali Pulendran +31 more
TL;DR: In the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of COVID-19 patients, the authors observed reduced expression of human leukocyte antigen class DR (HLA-DR) and proinflammatory cytokines by myeloid cells as well as impaired mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling and interferon-α (IFN-α) production by plasmacytoid dendritic cells.
Journal ArticleDOI
Acute SARS-CoV-2 Infection Impairs Dendritic Cell and T Cell Responses
Runhong Zhou,Kelvin K. W. To,Yik Chun Wong,Li Liu,Biao Zhou,Xin Li,Haode Huang,Yufei Mo,Tsz Yat Luk,Thomas Tsz Kan Lau,Pauline Yeung,Wai-Ming Chan,Alan Ka Lun Wu,Kwok Cheung Lung,Owen Tak-Yin Tsang,Wai Shing Leung,Ivan Hung,Kwok-Yung Yuen,Zhiwei Chen +18 more
TL;DR: Investigating 17 acute and 24 convalescent patients found that acute SARS-CoV-2 infection resulted in broad immune cell reduction including T, NK, monocyte and dendritic cell (DC) and DCs were significantly reduced with functional impairment, and cDC:pDC ratios were increased among acute severe patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Escalating infection control response to the rapidly evolving epidemiology of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) due to SARS-CoV-2 in Hong Kong.
Vincent C.C. Cheng,Shuk-Ching Wong,Jonathan H. K. Chen,Cyril C. Y. Yip,Vivien W M Chuang,Owen Tak-Yin Tsang,Siddharth Sridhar,Jasper Fuk-Woo Chan,Pak-Leung Ho,Kwok-Yung Yuen +9 more
TL;DR: appropriate hospital infection control measures was able to prevent nosocomial transmission of SARS-CoV-2, and early airborne infection isolation, rapid molecular diagnostic testing, and contact tracing for healthcare workers with unprotected exposure in the hospitals was implemented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cross-reactive Antibody Response between SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV Infections.
Huibin Lv,Nicholas C. Wu,Owen Tak-Yin Tsang,Meng Yuan,Ranawaka A.P.M. Perera,Wai Shing Leung,Ray T.Y. So,Jacky Man Chun Chan,Garrick K. Yip,Thomas Shiu Hong Chik,Yiquan Wang,Chris Yau Chung Choi,Yihan Lin,Wilson W. Ng,Jincun Zhao,Leo L.M. Poon,J S Malik Peiris,Ian A. Wilson,Chris Ka Pun Mok +18 more
TL;DR: Analysis of plasma from patients infected by SARS-CoV-2 or SARV, and from infected or immunized mice shows cross-reactivity in antibody binding to the spike protein is common, but cross-neutralization of the live viruses may be rare, indicating the presence of non-neutralizing antibody response to conserved epitopes in the spike.
Journal ArticleDOI
Serological assays for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), March 2020.
Ranawaka A.P.M. Perera,Chris Ka Pun Mok,Owen Tak-Yin Tsang,Huibin Lv,Ronald L.W. Ko,Nicholas C. Wu,Meng Yuan,Wai Shing Leung,Jacky Man Chun Chan,Thomas Shiu Hong Chik,Chris Yau Chung Choi,Kathy Leung,Kin Ho Chan,Karl C. K. Chan,Ka Chi Li,Joseph T. Wu,Ian A. Wilson,Arnold S. Monto,Leo L.M. Poon,Malik Peiris +19 more
TL;DR: Using IgG ELISA based on the RBD of the spike protein to screen sera for SARS-CoV-2 antibody, followed by confirmation using PRNT90, is a valid approach for large-scale sero-epidemiology studies.
