TL;DR: In this article, pions were measured with the 4π detector FOPI at GSI using the Au on Au reaction at 106 AGeV bombarding energy, and the average pion multiplicities per participant were #### and #### these values are only half as large as extrapolated from the low mass systems studied by Harris et al.

TL;DR: Highly central collisions have been studied using a double selection criterion which combines large charged-particle multiplicities with small transverse-momentum directivities and about one quarter of the total nuclear charge emerges as intermediate-mass fragments with nuclear charges.
