Journal ArticleDOI
An extremely primitive star in the Galactic halo
Elisabetta Caffau,Elisabetta Caffau,Piercarlo Bonifacio,Patrick Francois,Patrick Francois,Luca Sbordone,Lorenzo Monaco,M. Spite,Francois Spite,Hans-Günter Ludwig,Hans-Günter Ludwig,Roger Cayrel,Simone Zaggia,Francois Hammer,Sofia Randich,Paolo Molaro,Vanessa Hill +16 more
TL;DR: It is shown that low-mass stars can be formed at very low metallicity, that is, below the critical value of Z, which implies that the stellar material must have experienced temperatures above two million kelvin in its history, given that this is necessary to destroy lithium.
Journal ArticleDOI
The DART Imaging And CaT Survey of the Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
Giuseppina Battaglia,Eline Tolstoy,Amina Helmi,Mike Irwin,B. Letarte,Pascale Jablonka,Vanessa Hill,Kim Venn,Matthew Shetrone,Nobuo Arimoto,Francesca Primas,Andreas Kaufer,Patrick Francois,Thomas Szeifert,Tom Abel,Kozo Sadakane +15 more
TL;DR: In this article, the structural parameters of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy were derived using wide field imaging covering the galaxy out to its tidal radius, and the spatial distribution of the stars of different ages as selected from colour-magnitude diagram analysis.
Journal ArticleDOI
The influence of chemical composition on the properties of Cepheid stars. II - The iron content ⋆
Martino Romaniello,Francesca Primas,M. Mottini,S. Pedicelli,B. Lemasle,Giuseppe Bono,Giuseppe Bono,Patrick Francois,Martin Groenewegen,C. D. Laney +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, the influence of the stellar iron content on the Cepheid period-luminosity (PL) relation in the V and K bands was investigated and it was shown that metal-rich Cepheids appear to be systematically fainter than metal-poor ones.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
4MOST - 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope
Roelof S. de Jong,Olga Bellido-Tirado,Cristina Chiappini,Éric Depagne,Roger Haynes,Diane Johl,Olivier Schnurr,Axel Schwope,J. Walcher,Frank Dionies,Dionne M. Haynes,Andreas Kelz,Francisco S. Ludwig,Andreas Quirrenbach,Luca Sbordone,Walter Seifert,Guido Thimm,Trifon Trifonov,Amina Helmi,Scott Trager,Sofia Feltzing,Andreas Korn,Wilfried Boland +84 more
TL;DR: The 4MOST project as mentioned in this paper proposes a wide-field (3 square degree, goal >5 square degree), high-multiplex (1500 fibres, goal 3000 fibres) spectroscopic survey facility for an ESO 4m-class telescope.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Pristine survey - I. Mining the Galaxy for the most metal-poor stars
Else Starkenburg,Nicolas F. Martin,Nicolas F. Martin,Kris Youakim,D. S. Aguado,D. S. Aguado,Carlos Allende Prieto,Carlos Allende Prieto,A. Arentsen,Edouard J. Bernard,Piercarlo Bonifacio,Elisabetta Caffau,Raymond G. Carlberg,Patrick Côté,Morgan Fouesneau,Patrick Francois,Patrick Francois,Oliver Franke,Oliver Franke,Jonay I. González Hernández,Jonay I. Venn +31 more
TL;DR: The Pristine survey as mentioned in this paper is a narrow-band photometric survey focused on the metallicity-sensitive Ca HK lines and conducted in the Northern hemisphere with the wide-field imager MegaCam on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope.
