Journal ArticleDOI
Mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 Transmission and Pathogenesis.
TL;DR: Advances in animal models that are important for understanding the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2, vaccine development, and therapeutic testing are presented and comparisons are made from studies with SARS to provide further perspectives on COVID-19 and draw inferences for future investigations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evolutionary enhancement of Zika virus infectivity in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes
Yang Liu,Yang Liu,Jianying Liu,Jianying Liu,Senyan Du,Chao Shan,Kaixiao Nie,Rudian Zhang,Xiaofeng Li,Renli Zhang,Tao Wang,Tao Wang,Cheng-Feng Qin,Penghua Wang,Pei Yong Shi,Gong Cheng,Gong Cheng +16 more
TL;DR: It is shown that NS1 antigenaemia determines ZIKV infectivity in its mosquito vector Aedes aegypti, which acquires ZikV via a blood meal, and that ZIKv evolved to acquire a spontaneous mutation in its NS1 protein, resulting in increased NS1 Antigenaemic Syndrome.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nlrp9b inflammasome restricts rotavirus infection in intestinal epithelial cells
Shu Zhu,Siyuan Ding,Siyuan Ding,Penghua Wang,Zheng Wei,Wen Pan,Noah W. Palm,Yi-Hsuan Yang,Hua Yu,Hua-Bing Li,Geng Wang,Xuqiu Lei,Marcel R. de Zoete,Jun Zhao,Yunjiang Zheng,Haiwei Chen,Yujiao Zhao,Kellie A. Jurado,Ningguo Feng,Liang Shan,Yuval Kluger,Jun Lu,Clara Abraham,Erol Fikrig,Erol Fikrig,Harry B. Greenberg,Harry B. Greenberg,Richard A. Flavell,Richard A. Flavell +28 more
TL;DR: An important innate immune signalling pathway that functions in intestinal epithelial cells and may present useful targets in the modulation of host defences against viral pathogens is highlighted.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nlrp6 regulates intestinal antiviral innate immunity.
Penghua Wang,Shu Zhu,Long Yang,Long Yang,Shuang Cui,Wen Pan,Ruaidhri Jackson,Yunjiang Zheng,Anthony Rongvaux,Qiangming Sun,Guang Yang,Shandian Gao,Rongtuan Lin,Fuping You,Richard A. Flavell,Richard A. Flavell,Erol Fikrig,Erol Fikrig +17 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that Nlrp6 functions with Dhx15 as a viral RNA sensor to induce ISGs, and this effect is especially important in the intestinal tract.
Journal ArticleDOI
Alterations in the Aedes aegypti transcriptome during infection with West Nile, dengue and yellow fever viruses.
Tonya M. Colpitts,Jonathan Cox,Dana L. Vanlandingham,Fabiana Feitosa,Fabiana Feitosa,Gong Cheng,Sebastian Kurscheid,Penghua Wang,Manoj N. Krishnan,Stephen Higgs,Erol Fikrig,Erol Fikrig +11 more
TL;DR: A pupal cuticle protein was shown to bind WNV envelope protein, leading to inhibition of infection in vitro and the prevention of lethal WNV encephalitis in mice, and an extensive list of targets for controlling flaviviral infection in mosquitoes is provided.
