TL;DR: In this article, the effects of a mere measurement treatment and an implementation intentions treatment (asking people how they intend to vote) were estimated for both one-shot goals (e.g., voting on Election Day) and open-ended goals with deadlines in either days or months in the future.

Setting One's Mind on Action: Planning Out Goal Striving in Advance

TL;DR: In this article, the processes on which the beneficial effects of implementation intentions are based are discussed by pointing to relevant research using cognitive task paradigms and assessing brain data, and a behavior change intervention is introduced that establishes the prerequisites for implementation intention effects to occur, and research areas in psychology are pointed to that could benefit from conducting implementation intention research.
