Journal ArticleDOI
Multicenter Comparison Trial of DNA Extraction Methods and PCR Assays for Detection of Chlamydia pneumoniae in Endarterectomy Specimens
Petra Apfalter,Francesco Blasi,Jens Boman,Charlotte A. Gaydos,Michael Kundi,Matthias Maass,Athanasios Makristathis,Adam Meijer,Reinhard Nadrchal,Kenneth Persson,Manfred Rotter,C. Y. W. Tong,Gerold Stanek,Alexander M. Hirschl +13 more
TL;DR: Positivity rates for atheroma samples varied between 0 and 60% for the different test methods, with the maximum concordant result for positivity being only 25% for one carotid artery sample.
Journal ArticleDOI
Two Enzyme Immunoassays and PCR for Detection of Helicobacter pylori in Stool Specimens from Pediatric Patients before and after Eradication Therapy
Athanasios Makristathis,Wolfgang Barousch,Eva Pasching,Christa Binder,Christa Kuderna,Petra Apfalter,Manfred Rotter,Alexander M. Hirschl +7 more
TL;DR: Both EIAs were shown to be suitable for early posttreatment control in contrast to PCR, and both showed an excellent performance with an overall sensitivity and specificity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Emergence of methicillin resistance predates the clinical use of antibiotics
Jesper Larsen,Claire Raisen,Xiaoliang Ba,Nicholas J. Sadgrove,Guillermo F. Padilla-González,Monique S. J. Simmonds,Igor Loncaric,Heidrun Kerschner,Petra Apfalter,Rainer Hartl,Ariane Deplano,Stien Vandendriessche,Barbora Černá Bolfíková,Pavel Hulva,Maiken Cavling Arendrup,Rasmus Krøger Hare,Céline Barnadas,Marc Stegger,Raphael N. Paterson,Xavier Didelot,Mark A. Holmes,J. Harrison,Anders Rhod Larsen +63 more
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors show that methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus appeared in hedgehogs in the pre-antibiotic era, and these lineages spread within the local hedgehog populations and between hedge-hogs and secondary hosts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison of a New Quantitative ompA-Based Real-Time PCR TaqMan Assay for Detection of Chlamydia pneumoniae DNA in Respiratory Specimens with Four Conventional PCR Assays
Petra Apfalter,Wolfgang Barousch,Marion Nehr,Athanasios Makristathis,Birgit Willinger,Manfred Rotter,Alexander M. Hirschl +6 more
TL;DR: A new quantitative ompA-based real-time PCR assay based on TaqMan technology for detection of C. pneumoniae in respiratory samples shows the best analytical sensitivity and could detect even lower target levels from spiked sputum, with the 16S rRNA assays performing better than the omp a-based nested PCR.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reliability of nested PCR for detection of Chlamydia pneumoniae DNA in atheromas: results from a multicenter study applying standardized protocols.
Petra Apfalter,Ojan Assadian,Francesco Blasi,Jens Boman,Charlotte A. Gaydos,Michael Kundi,Athanasios Makristathis,Marion Nehr,Manfred Rotter,Alexander M. Hirschl +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a multicenter study was designed to find explanations for the discrepancies in the reported rates of detection of Chlamydia pneumoniae DNA in endarterectomy specimens.
