Guidelines for the validation and application of typing methods for use in bacterial epidemiology
A. van Belkum,Panayotis T. Tassios,Lenie Dijkshoorn,Sara Hæggman,Barry Cookson,Norman K. Fry,V. Fussing,Jonathan Green,Edward J. Feil,Peter Gerner-Smidt,Sylvain Brisse,Marc Struelens +11 more
TL;DR: Newer and older, phenotypic and genotypic methods for typing of all clinically relevant bacterial species are described according to their principles, advantages and disadvantages and Criteria for their evaluation and application and the interpretation of their results are proposed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluation of Molecular Typing Methods in Characterizing a European Collection of Epidemic Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Strains: the HARMONY Collection
Barry Cookson,D. Ashley Robinson,Alastair B. Monk,Stephen Murchan,Ariane Deplano,Rafael De Ryck,Marc Struelens,Christina Scheel,Vivian Fussing,Saara Salmenlinna,Jaana Vuopio-Varkila,C Cuny,Wolfgang Witte,Panayotis T. Tassios,N. J. Rossney,Brian O'Connell,Benjamin R. D. Short,Jonathan C. Thomas,Simon J. O’Hanlon,Mark C. Enright +29 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the integration of such technologies is achievable, although common protocols (such as those developed for PFGE) may also be important, as is the use of centralized Internet sites to facilitate data analysis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Paterson,Xavier Didelot,Mark A. Holmes,J. Harrison,Anders Rhod Larsen +63 more
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors show that methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus appeared in hedgehogs in the pre-antibiotic era, and these lineages spread within the local hedgehog populations and between hedge-hogs and secondary hosts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clonal Spread Among Swedish Children of a Staphylococcus aureus Strain Resistant to Fusidic Acid
TL;DR: In Sweden, an increased incidence of fusidic acid-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains causing superficial infections among children in Sweden has been noted since the mid-1990s.
Journal ArticleDOI
Imported Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Sweden
Mikael Stenhem,Åke Örtqvist,Håkan Ringberg,Leif Larsson,Barbro Olsson-Liljequist,Sara Hæggman,Mats Kalin,Karl Ekdahl +7 more
TL;DR: Knowledge of different risks for infection will improve control measures and lead to more effective and efficient management of infectious diseases.
