Larrañaga,Karin Jirström,Jonas Manjer,Annika Idahl,Nina Ohlson,K-T Khaw,Nicholas J. Wareham,T Mouw,Teresa Norat,Elio Riboli +49 more
TL;DR: This study shows a strong protective association of oral contraceptives and parity with ovarian cancer risk, a higher risk with a late age at menopause, and no association with other reproductive factors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Serum 25(OH) Vitamin D and Risk of Breast Cancer: A Nested Case-Control Study from the French E3N Cohort
Pierre Engel,Guy Fagherazzi,Anne Boutten,Thierry Dupré,Sylvie Mesrine,Marie-Christine Boutron-Ruault,Françoise Clavel-Chapelon +6 more
TL;DR: The findings support a decreased risk of breast cancer associated with high 25(OH) vitamin D3 serum concentrations, especially in younger women, although it is unable to confirm a direct influence of age or menopausal status.
Journal ArticleDOI
Postmenopausal Serum Sex Steroids and Risk of Hormone Receptor-Positive and -Negative Breast Cancer : a Nested Case-Control Study
Rebecca E. James,Annekatrin Lukanova,Laure Dossus,Susen Becker,Sabina Rinaldi,Anne Tjønneland,Anja Olsen,Kim Overvad,Sylvie Mesrine,Pierre Engel,Françoise Clavel-Chapelon,Jenny Chang-Claude,Alina Vrieling,Heiner Boeing,Madlen Schütze,Antonia Trichopoulou,Pagona Lagiou,Dimitrios Trichopoulos,Domenico Palli,Vittorio Krogh,Salvatore Panico,Rosario Tumino,Carlotta Sacerdote,Laudina Rodríguez,Genevieve Buckland,María José Sánchez,Pilar Amiano,Eva Ardanaz,Bas Bueno-de-Mesquita,Martine M. TL;DR: Further research is needed to establish through which molecular pathways, and during which evolutionary stages of development, androgens and estrogens can promote the occurrence of both receptor-positive and -negative clinical breast tumors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Vitamin D Receptor and Calcium Sensing Receptor Polymorphisms and the Risk of Colorectal Cancer in European Populations
Mazda Jenab,James McKay,Hendrik B. Bueno-de-Mesquita,Fränzel J.B. Roddam,Timothy J. Key,Kay-Tee Khaw,Sheila Bingham,Paolo Boffetta,Philippe Autier,Graham Byrnes,Teresa Norat,Elio Riboli +51 more
TL;DR: A role for the BsmI polymorphism of the VDR gene in CRC risk is confirmed, independent of serum 25OHD concentration and dietary calcium intake.
Journal ArticleDOI
Joint effects of dietary vitamin D and sun exposure on breast cancer risk: results from the French E3N cohort
Pierre Engel,Guy Fagherazzi,Sylvie Mesrine,Marie-Christine Boutron-Ruault,Françoise Clavel-Chapelon +4 more
TL;DR: A threshold of vitamin D exposure from both sun and diet is required to prevent breast cancer and this threshold is particularly difficult to reach in postmenopausal women at northern latitudes where quality of sunlight is too poor for adequate vitamin D production.
