Variation in Microbiome LPS Immunogenicity Contributes to Autoimmunity in Humans
Tommi Vatanen,Tommi Vatanen,Aleksandar Kostic,Aleksandar Kostic,Eva d'Hennezel,Heli Siljander,Eric A. Franzosa,Eric A. Franzosa,Moran Yassour,Raivo Kolde,Hera Vlamakis,Timothy D. Porter,Harri Lähdesmäki,Curtis Huttenhower,Curtis Huttenhower,Dirk Gevers,Thomas W. Cullen,Mikael Knip,Ramnik J. Xavier +30 more
TL;DR: It is shown that Bacteroides LPS is structurally distinct from E. coli LPS and inhibits innate immune signaling and endotoxin tolerance, and that early colonization by immunologically silencing microbiota may preclude aspects of immune education.
Journal ArticleDOI
The geoepidemiology of type 1 diabetes
TL;DR: The declining proportion of newly diagnosed children with high-risk genotypes suggests that environmental pressures are now able to trigger T1D in genotypes that previously would not have developed the disease during childhood, but the findings are too inconsistent to allow firm conclusions.
Journal ArticleDOI
AIRE-Deficient Patients Harbor Unique High-Affinity Disease-Ameliorating Autoantibodies
Steffen Meyer,Martin Woodward,Christina Hertel,Philip Vlaicu,Yasmin Haque,Jaanika Kärner,Annalisa Macagno,Shimobi Onuoha,Dmytro Fishman,Hedi Peterson,Kaja Metsküla,Raivo Uibo,Kirsi Jäntti,Kati Hokynar,Anette S. Husebye,Katarina Trebušak Podkrajšek,Tadej Battelino,Nina Bratanic,Aleksandr Peet,Kai Krohn,Annamari Ranki,Pärt Peterson,Kai Kisand,Adrian Hayday +26 more
TL;DR: It is shown that most APS1/APECED patients displayed B cell autoreactivity toward unique sets of approximately 100 self-proteins, and naturally occurring human autoantibodies may actively limit disease and be of therapeutic utility.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification by molecular cloning of an autoantigen associated with Addison's disease as steroid 17α-hydroxylase
TL;DR: The results show that one of the key enzymes in steroid biosynthesis, 17 alpha-hydroxylase, is an autoantigen involved in the pathogenesis of adrenocortical failure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Autoantibodies to cytochrome P450 enzymes P450scc, P450c17, and P450c21 in autoimmune polyglandular disease types I and II and in isolated Addison's disease
TL;DR: Immunofluorescence studies showed good correlation with the known fact that the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex is devoid of the P450c17, that the Leydig cells of the testis and the theca interna cells ofThe ovary express P450 c17 and P450scc, and that the placental trophoblasts express only P450 scc.
