Uyarra,Markus Venohr,Peter C. von der Ohe,Nigel Willby,Daniel Hering +71 more
TL;DR: A cross-scale analysis of paired-stressor effects on biological variables of European freshwater ecosystems shows that in 39% of cases, significant effects were limited to single stressors, with nutrient enrichment being the most important of these in lakes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Decline in Chinese lake phosphorus concentration accompanied by shift in sources since 2006
Yindong Tong,Wei Zhang,Xuejun Wang,Raoul-Marie Couture,Raoul-Marie Couture,Thorjørn Larssen,Yue Zhao,Jing Li,Huijiao Liang,Xue-Yan Liu,Xiaoge Bu,Wei He,Qianggong Zhang,Yan Lin +13 more
TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors analyzed water quality data, recorded between 2006 and 2014 in 862 freshwater lakes in four geographical regions of China, to assess the input of phosphorus from human activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sorption of Arsenite, Arsenate, and Thioarsenates to Iron Oxides and Iron Sulfides: A Kinetic and Spectroscopic Investigation
Raoul-Marie Couture,Raoul-Marie Couture,Jérôme Rose,Naresh Kumar,Kristen Mitchell,Dirk Wallschläger,P. Van Cappellen +6 more
TL;DR: Analysis of the X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) spectra of sorbed complexes implied that monothioarsenate binds to Fe oxides as a monodentate, inner-sphere complex, and mono- and tetrathioARSenate were both unstable and partially reduced to arsenite.
Journal ArticleDOI
Arsenic, iron and sulfur co-diagenesis in lake sediments
TL;DR: In this article, an inverse modeling approach based on a one-dimensional transport-reaction equation assuming steady-state, was applied to the porewater As profiles and used to constrain the net rates of reactions involving As (R net As ).
Journal ArticleDOI
Improvement in municipal wastewater treatment alters lake nitrogen to phosphorus ratios in populated regions
Yindong Tong,Mengzhu Wang,Josep Peñuelas,Xue-Yan Liu,Hans W. Paerl,Hans W. Paerl,James J. Elser,Jordi Sardans,Raoul-Marie Couture,Thorjørn Larssen,Hongying Hu,Xin Dong,Wei He,Wei Zhang,Xuejun Wang,Yang Zhang,Yi Liu,Siyu Zeng,Xiang-Zhen Kong,Annette B.G. Janssen,Yan Lin +20 more
TL;DR: It is shown that changes in municipal wastewater treatment are a major driver for increases in lake TN/TP mass ratios, as phosphorus is more effectively removed than nitrogen from wastewater, and long-term strategies for domestic wastewater management should not merely focus on total reductions of nutrient discharges but also consider their stoichiometric balance.
