Deep glacial troughs and stabilizing ridges unveiled beneath the margins of the Antarctic ice sheet
Mathieu Morlighem,Eric Rignot,Tobias Binder,Donald D. Blankenship,Reinhard Drews,Reinhard Drews,Graeme Eagles,Olaf Eisen,Fausto Ferraccioli,René Forsberg,Peter T. Fretwell,Vikram Goel,Jamin S. Greenbaum,Hilmar Gudmundsson,Jingxue Guo,Veit Helm,Coen Hofstede,Ian M. Howat,Angelika Humbert,Wilfried Jokat,Nanna B. Karlsson,Won Sang Lee,Kenichi Matsuoka,Romain Millan,Jeremie Mouginot,John Paden,Frank Pattyn,Jason L. Roberts,Sebastian Rosier,Antonia Ruppel,Helene Seroussi,Emma Smith,Daniel Steinhage,Bo Sun,Michiel R. van den Broeke,Tas van Ommen,Melchior van Wessem,Duncan A. Young +37 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a high-resolution and physically based description of Antarctica bed topography using mass conservation is presented, revealing previously unknown basal features with major implications for glacier response to climate change.
Journal ArticleDOI
Getting around Antarctica: new high-resolution mappings of the grounded and freely-floating boundaries of the Antarctic ice sheet created for the International Polar Year
Robert Bindschadler,Hyeungu Choi,Amy Wichlacz,Robert Bingham,Jennifer Bohlander,Kelly M. Brunt,Hugh F. J. Corr,Reinhard Drews,Helen A. Fricker,Monica Hall,Richard C. A. Hindmarsh,Jack Kohler,Laurie Padman,Wolfgang Rack,G. Rotschky,Stefano Urbini,Patricia Vornberger,Neal Young +17 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the boundary of grounded ice features and the freely-floating boundary are mapped at 15m resolution by par- ticipants of the International Polar Year project ASAID us- ing customized software combining Landsat-7 imagery and ICESat/GLAS laser altimetry.
Journal ArticleDOI
Meltwater produced by wind-albedo interaction stored in an East Antarctic ice shelf
Jan T. M. Lenaerts,Jan T. M. Lenaerts,Stef Lhermitte,Stef Lhermitte,Reinhard Drews,Reinhard Drews,Stefan R. M. Ligtenberg,Sophie Berger,Veit Helm,C. J. P. P. Smeets,M. R. van den Broeke,W. J. van de Berg,E. van Meijgaard,M. Eijkelboom,Olaf Eisen,Frank Pattyn +15 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate that warmer temperatures associated with katabatic winds drive similar processes in an East Antarctic ice shelf, highlighting vulnerability to disintegration, and demonstrate that surface melt has been tied to the collapse of Antarctic Peninsula ice shelves.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antarctic ice rises and rumples: Their properties and significance for ice-sheet dynamics and evolution
Kenichi Matsuoka,Richard C. A. Hindmarsh,Geir Moholdt,Michael J. Bentley,Hamish D. Pritchard,Joel Brown,Howard Conway,Reinhard Drews,Gaël Durand,Daniel Goldberg,Tore Hattermann,Jonathan Kingslake,Jan T. M. Lenaerts,Carlos Martín,Robert Mulvaney,Keith W. Nicholls,Frank Pattyn,Neil Ross,Ted Scambos,Pippa L. Whitehouse +19 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluate and improve prognostic numerical models and parameterizations of the effects of small-scale pinning points on grounding-zone dynamics, which is needed to assess their impact on ice-sheet behavior.
Journal ArticleDOI
Layer disturbances and the radio-echo free zone in ice sheets
Reinhard Drews,Olaf Eisen,Olaf Eisen,Ilka Weikusat,Sepp Kipfstuhl,Astrid Lambrecht,Daniel Steinhage,Frank Wilhelms,Heinrich Miller +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors compare the echo-free zone (EFZ) with the dielectric properties, crystal orientation fabrics and optical stratigraphy of the EPICA-DML ice core and find that the EFZ onset at ~2100 m marks a boundary, below which the ice core may have experienced flow induced disturbances on various scales.
