Aerial strategies advance volcanic gas measurements at inaccessible, strongly degassing volcanoes
Emma J. Liu,Emma J. Liu,Alessandro Aiuppa,A. Alan,Santiago Arellano,Marcello Bitetto,Nicole Bobrowski,Nicole Bobrowski,Simon Carn,Robert Clarke,E. Corrales,J. M. de Moor,Jorge Andres Diaz,Marie Edmonds,Tobias Fischer,Jim Freer,Jim Freer,G. M. Fricke,Bo Galle,Gustav Gerdes,Gaetano Giudice,Alexandra Gutmann,Catherine Hayer,Ima Itikarai,J. Jones,Emily Mason,B. T. McCormick Kilbride,Kila Mulina,Scott Nowicki,K.E. Rahilly,Thomas Richardson,Julian Rüdiger,C. I. Schipper,I. M. Watson,Kieran Wood +34 more
TL;DR: It is found that aerial strategies reduce uncertainties associated with ground-based remote sensing of SO2 flux and enable near–real-time measurements of plume chemistry and carbon isotope composition and the need to account for time averaging of temporal variability in volcanic gas emissions in global flux estimates is emphasized.
Journal ArticleDOI
Remote sensing and identification of volcanic plumes using fixed-wing UAVs over Volcán de Fuego, Guatemala
Journal ArticleDOI
On-Board Real-Time Trajectory Planning for Fixed Wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Extreme Environments.
TL;DR: An RTTP based around a genetic algorithm optimisation running on a Raspberry Pi 3 B+, the first of its kind to be flown on-board a UAV, is presented, showing approximately equivalent efficiency characteristics to conventionally planned missions.
Journal ArticleDOI
BVLOS UAS Operations in Highly-Turbulent Volcanic Plumes
Kieran Wood,Emma J. Liu,Thomas Richardson,Robert Clarke,Jim Freer,Alessandro Aiuppa,Gaetano Giudice,Marcello Bitetto,Kila Mulina,Ima Itikarai +9 more
TL;DR: A detailed analysis of three BVLOS flights into the plume of Manam volcano is presented and a number of lessons learned are identified and appropriate recommendations to reduce risk in future flight operations are proposed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Visual Odometry Using Pixel Processor Arrays for Unmanned Aerial Systems in GPS Denied Environments
Alexander McConville,Laurie Bose,Robert Clarke,Walterio W. Mayol-Cuevas,Jianing Chen,Colin Greatwood,Stephen J. Carey,Piotr Dudek,Thomas Richardson +8 more
TL;DR: This paper demonstrates the use of a PPA device—the SCAMP vision chip—combining perception and compute capabilities on the same device for aiding in real-time navigation and control of aerial robots.
