Journal ArticleDOI
Implementation of electrochemical, optical and denuder-based sensors and sampling techniques on UAV for volcanic gas measurements: examples from Masaya, Turrialba and Stromboli volcanoes
Julian Rüdiger,Julian Rüdiger,Jan-Lukas Tirpitz,J. Maarten de Moor,Nicole Bobrowski,Nicole Bobrowski,Nicole Bobrowski,Alexandra Gutmann,Marco Liuzzo,Martha Ibarra,Thorsten Hoffmann +10 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate the successful deployment of a multirotor UAV system with custom-made lightweight payloads for the compositional analysis and gas flux estimation of volcanic plumes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Aerial strategies advance volcanic gas measurements at inaccessible, strongly degassing volcanoes
Emma J. Liu,Emma J. Liu,Alessandro Aiuppa,A. Alan,Santiago Arellano,Marcello Bitetto,Nicole Bobrowski,Nicole Bobrowski,Simon Carn,Robert Clarke,E. Corrales,J. M. de Moor,Jorge Andres Diaz,Marie Edmonds,Tobias Fischer,Jim Freer,Jim Freer,G. M. Fricke,Bo Galle,Gustav Gerdes,Gaetano Giudice,Alexandra Gutmann,Catherine Hayer,Ima Itikarai,J. Jones,Emily Mason,B. T. McCormick Kilbride,Kila Mulina,Scott Nowicki,K.E. Rahilly,Thomas Richardson,Julian Rüdiger,C. I. Schipper,I. M. Watson,Kieran Wood +34 more
TL;DR: It is found that aerial strategies reduce uncertainties associated with ground-based remote sensing of SO2 flux and enable near–real-time measurements of plume chemistry and carbon isotope composition and the need to account for time averaging of temporal variability in volcanic gas emissions in global flux estimates is emphasized.
Journal ArticleDOI
Advances in Bromine Speciation in Volcanic Plumes
Alexandra Gutmann,Nicole Bobrowski,Nicole Bobrowski,Tjarda Roberts,Julian Rüdiger,Thorsten Hoffmann +5 more
TL;DR: A review on volcanic bromine data achieved from established and cutting edge measurement techniques as well as their treatment and interpretation in recent model experiments can be found in this paper, where the authors provide an overview of the existing and proposed methods for the extraction of bromines from volcanic plumes.
Journal ArticleDOI
African volcanic emissions influencing atmospheric aerosols over the Amazon rain forest
Jorge Saturno,Florian Ditas,Marloes Penning de Vries,Bruna A. Holanda,Mira L. Pöhlker,Samara Carbone,David Walter,Nicole Bobrowski,Joel Brito,Xuguang Chi,Alexandra Gutmann,Isabella Hrabe de Angelis,Luiz A. T. Machado,Daniel Moran-Zuloaga,Julian Rüdiger,Johannes Schneider,Christiane Schulz,Qiaoqiao Wang,Manfred Wendisch,Paulo Artaxo,Thomas Wagner,Ulrich Pöschl,Meinrat O. Andreae,Christopher Pöhlker +23 more
TL;DR: In this article, the influence of emissions from the Nyamuragira-Nyiragongo volcanoes in Africa on Amazonian aerosol properties and atmospheric composition during September 2014 was investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI
A multi-purpose, multi-rotor drone system for long-range and high-altitude volcanic gas plume measurements
Bo Galle,Santiago Arellano,Nicole Bobrowski,Nicole Bobrowski,Vladimir Conde,Tobias Fischer,Gustav Gerdes,Alexandra Gutmann,Thorsten Hoffmann,Ima Itikarai,Tomas Krejci,Emma J. Liu,Emma J. Liu,Kila Mulina,Scott Nowicki,Thomas Richardson,Julian Rüdiger,Kieran Wood,Jiazhi Xu +18 more
TL;DR: In this article, a multi-rotor drone has been adapted for studies of volcanic gas plumes, which includes improved capacity for high-altitude and long-range, real-time SO2 concentration monitoring, longrange manual control, remotely activated bag sampling and plume speed measurement capabilities.
