Journal ArticleDOI

Toll-like receptor 9 mediates innate immune activation by the malaria pigment hemozoin

TL;DR: This work demonstrates that HZ purified from Plasmodium falciparum is a novel non-DNA ligand for Toll-like receptor (TLR)9, and activation by HZ activated innate immune responses in vivo and in vitro, resulting in the production of cytokines, chemokines, and up-regulation of costimulatory molecules.
Journal ArticleDOI

Serine Repeat Antigen (SERA5) Is Predominantly Expressed among the SERA Multigene Family of Plasmodium falciparum, and the Acquired Antibody Titers Correlate with Serum Inhibition of the Parasite Growth

TL;DR: Northern blotting and real time quantitative reverse transcription-PCR with five independent parasite strains have shown that all of the SERA homologues are transcribed most actively at trophozoite and schizont stages and that SERA5 (SERA/SERP) is transcribed predominantly among the family.
Journal ArticleDOI

New readily accessible peroxides with High Anti-malarial Potency

TL;DR: 6-carbomethoxymethyl-3-methoxy- 3-pentyl-1,2-dioxane, which has been readily synthesized from 6-keto-alpha,beta-unsaturated ester, was found to exhibit potent anti-malarial activity with high selective toxicity.
