Journal ArticleDOI
Non-targeted effects of ionising radiation—Implications for low dose risk
Munira Kadhim,Sisko Salomaa,Eric G. Wright,Guido Hildebrandt,O.V. Belyakov,Kevin M. Prise,Mark P. Little +6 more
TL;DR: The evidence for non-targeted effects is critically examined, apparently contradictory results are discussed and implications for low-dose radiation health effects are considered.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nuclear Weapons Tests and Human Germline Mutation Rate
Yuri E. Dubrova,Bersimbaev Ri,Leila B. Djansugurova,Maira K. Tankimanova,Zaure Zh. Mamyrbaeva,Mustonen R,Carita Lindholm,Maj Hultén,Sisko Salomaa +8 more
TL;DR: The population around the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in Kazakhstan provides an unparalleled opportunity for the analysis of the genetic risk of ionizing radiation to humans.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cancer predictive value of cytogenetic markers used in occupational health surveillance programs: a report from an ongoing study by the European Study Group on Cytogenetic Biomarkers and Health.
Lars Hagmar,Stefano Bonassi,Ulf Strömberg,Zoli Mikoczy,Cecilia Lando,Inger Lise Hansteen,Alicia Huici Montagud,Lisbeth E. Knudsen,Hannu Norppa,Christina Reuterwall,Håkan Tinnerberg,Anton Brøgger,Alessandra Forni,Benkt Högstedt,Bo Lambert,Felix Mitelman,Ingrid Nordenson,Sisko Salomaa,Staffan Skerfving +18 more
TL;DR: Nordic and Italian cohorts were established, and preliminary results indicated a predictive value of CA frequency for cancer risk, whereas no such associations were observed for SCE or MN, but it is not clear whether these biomarkers also may serve as biomarkers for genotoxic effects which will result in an enhanced cancer risk.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Nordic data base on somatic chromosome damage in humans
Anton Brøgger,Lars Hagmar,Inger Lise Hansteen,Sverre Heim,Benkt Högstedt,Lisbeth E. Knudsen,Bo Lambert,Kaija Linnainmaa,Felix Mitelman,Ingrid Nordenson,Christina Reuterwall,Sisko Salomaa,Staffan Skerfving,Marja Sorsa +13 more
TL;DR: Women had higher CA, MN, and SCE levels than men, but the sex effect was generally smaller than the effect of smoking, and age was positively associated with cytogenetic damage.
Journal ArticleDOI
Persistence of translocations after accidental exposure to ionizing radiation
TL;DR: The results suggest that during 2 years the yield of translocation in peripheral lymphocytes remained at a constant level after whole-body exposure, which supports the use of translocations for retrospective dosimetry, at least within this relatively short period of follow-up.
