Causal attribution of recent biological trends to climate change is complicated because non-climatic influences dominate local, short-term biological changes. Any underlying signal from climate change is likely to be revealed by analyses that seek systematic trends across diverse species and geographic regions; however, debates within the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reveal several definitions of a 'systematic trend'. Here, we explore these differences, apply diverse analyses to more than 1,700 species, and show that recent biological trends match climate change predictions. Global meta-analyses documented significant range shifts averaging 6.1 km per decade towards the poles (or metres per decade upward), and significant mean advancement of spring events by 2.3 days per decade. We define a diagnostic fingerprint of temporal and spatial 'sign-switching' responses uniquely predicted by twentieth century climate trends. Among appropriate long-term/large-scale/multi-species data sets, this diagnostic fingerprint was found for 279 species. This suite of analyses generates 'very high confidence' (as laid down by the IPCC) that climate change is already affecting living systems.

A globally coherent fingerprint of climate change impacts across natural systems

There is now ample evidence of the ecological impacts of recent climate change, from polar terrestrial to tropical marine environments. The responses of both flora and fauna span an array of ecosystems and organizational hierarchies, from the species to the community levels. Despite continued uncertainty as to community and ecosystem trajectories under global change, our review exposes a coherent pattern of ecological change across systems. Although we are only at an early stage in the projected trends of global warming, ecological responses to recent climate change are already clearly visible.

Ecological and Evolutionary Responses to Recent Climate Change

The authors propose a new climatic drought index: the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI). The SPEI is based on precipitation and temperature data, and it has the advantage of combining multiscalar character with the capacity to include the effects of temperature variability on drought assessment. The procedure to calculate the index is detailed and involves a climatic water balance, the accumulation of deficit/surplus at different time scales, and adjustment to a log-logistic probability distribution. Mathematically, the SPEI is similar to the standardized precipitation index (SPI), but it includes the role of temperature. Because the SPEI is based on a water balance, it can be compared to the self-calibrated Palmer drought severity index (sc-PDSI). Most atmospheric modification that exists in the United States is occurring accidentally as a result of man’s land-use changes. Cities, power plants, and certain agricultural activities modify the weather, often dramatically, on local and regional scales. These unintentional changes are so important and widespread that study of their scale and nature is essential in many design and policy areas. Knowing more about inadvertent weather modification has become a part of wise planning for hydrologic, agricultural, transportation systems, and activities. Furthermore, regional weather changes due to man’s use of land may reduce or enhance the effectiveness of efforts to purposefully modify the weather.

The effects of added summer rainfall on agricultural areas in Illinois and the Midwest were investigated by using a quasi-distributed-parameter watershed model. Increases in summer convective rainfall during July-August were simulated and used in the model to describe the changes in soil moisture, crop water use, shallow ground water, and streamflow conditions which could potentially result from precipitation augmentation practices. Two periods, representing very dry and very wet conditions, were used in the simulations with 10% to 25% precipitation increases. Results suggest that the greatest proportion of additional summer rainfall eventually percolates into groundwater, and that less than 25% percent of the precipitation increase is used by the crops. Simulated increases in summer rainfall offer limited utility in reducing crop water stress because the rainfall events do not always coincide with the period of greatest crop water need. Methods, such as irrigation, which provide additional water at a specified time and amount produce significant benefits to the plants.
