Causal attribution of recent biological trends to climate change is complicated because non-climatic influences dominate local, short-term biological changes. Any underlying signal from climate change is likely to be revealed by analyses that seek systematic trends across diverse species and geographic regions; however, debates within the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reveal several definitions of a 'systematic trend'. Here, we explore these differences, apply diverse analyses to more than 1,700 species, and show that recent biological trends match climate change predictions. Global meta-analyses documented significant range shifts averaging 6.1 km per decade towards the poles (or metres per decade upward), and significant mean advancement of spring events by 2.3 days per decade. We define a diagnostic fingerprint of temporal and spatial 'sign-switching' responses uniquely predicted by twentieth century climate trends. Among appropriate long-term/large-scale/multi-species data sets, this diagnostic fingerprint was found for 279 species. This suite of analyses generates 'very high confidence' (as laid down by the IPCC) that climate change is already affecting living systems.

A globally coherent fingerprint of climate change impacts across natural systems

There is now ample evidence of the ecological impacts of recent climate change, from polar terrestrial to tropical marine environments. The responses of both flora and fauna span an array of ecosystems and organizational hierarchies, from the species to the community levels. Despite continued uncertainty as to community and ecosystem trajectories under global change, our review exposes a coherent pattern of ecological change across systems. Although we are only at an early stage in the projected trends of global warming, ecological responses to recent climate change are already clearly visible.

Ecological and Evolutionary Responses to Recent Climate Change

The authors propose a new climatic drought index: the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI). The SPEI is based on precipitation and temperature data, and it has the advantage of combining multiscalar character with the capacity to include the effects of temperature variability on drought assessment. The procedure to calculate the index is detailed and involves a climatic water balance, the accumulation of deficit/surplus at different time scales, and adjustment to a log-logistic probability distribution. Mathematically, the SPEI is similar to the standardized precipitation index (SPI), but it includes the role of temperature. Because the SPEI is based on a water balance, it can be compared to the self-calibrated Palmer drought severity index (sc-PDSI). A Preliminary Report on Unique Hail and Tornadic Storm Observations in Central Illinois and Eastern Indiana on 3 April 1974

Data collected in Illinois on the behavior of growing cumulus clouds and their associated radar echoes are reviewed and the results are compared to findings in other regions. It is shown that the data collection techniques used, involving two panoramic cameras and a RHI-type radar, were not too successful in Illinois because of the high cloud density on days of cumulus activity.

On the Observation of Convective Clouds and the Radar-Precipitation Echoes Within Them

Two large-area operational seeding projects conducted in the Great Plains were evaluated statistically to determine if any seeding effects could be detected.  Historical data were used in the evaluation, and statistiscal tests using permutational procedures were applied to the data in obtaining the significances of estimated seeding effects.  The findings indicate a singificant rainfall changes in the Moddy Road project and the other project in northwestern Oklahoma.

A two-dimensional polynomial derived from synoptic scale data is used to infer values at intermediate subsynoptic points in order to enhance the detail in the analyzed variable fields. Variables examined were 850, 700, and 500 mb geopotential heights and temperatures for two map times, 0000 GMT 13 August 1980, a convectively quiet period, and 0000 GMT 14 August 1980, a convectively active period. Results suggest that during inactive periods the enhanced analysis only serves to confirm the lack of favorable convective development conditions. However, if synoptic-scale conditions are suitable, the availability of more detailed height and temperature fields can help delineate more likely convection regions.
