Microplastics as Vehicles of Environmental PAHs to Marine Organisms: Combined Chemical and Physical Hazards to the Mediterranean Mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis
Lucia Pittura,Carlo Giacomo Avio,Maria Elisa Giuliani,Giuseppe d’Errico,Steffen Keiter,Bettie Cormier,Bettie Cormier,Stefania Gorbi,Francesco Regoli +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of microplastics on marine organisms were investigated in Mediterranean mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis, using a quantitative weight of evidence (WOE) model.
Journal ArticleDOI
A new sediment contact assay to assess particle-bound pollutants using zebrafish (danio rerio) embryos
TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed a rapid and reliable, but comprehensive method to investigate native sediments and particulate matters without preceding extraction procedures, and compared the hazard potential of solid phase sediments to the effects of corresponding pore waters and organic extracts in order to characterize the bioavailability of the particle-bound pollutants.
Journal ArticleDOI
An ecotoxicological view on neurotoxicity assessment
Jessica Legradi,Jessica Legradi,C. Di Paolo,Michiel H. S. Kraak,H.G. van der Geest,Emma L. Schymanski,Antony J. Williams,Milou M.L. Dingemans,Riccardo Massei,Werner Brack,Xavier Cousin,Xavier Cousin,Marie-Laure Bégout,R. van der Oost,Alessandra Carion,Victoria Suarez-Ulloa,Frédéric Silvestre,Beate I. Escher,Beate I. Escher,Magnus Engwall,Greta Nilén,Steffen Keiter,D. Pollet,Petra Waldmann,Cornelia Kienle,Inge Werner,Ann Cathrin Haigis,Dries Knapen,Lucia Vergauwen,Marc Spehr,W. Schulz,Wibke Busch,David Leuthold,Stefan Scholz,C. M. vom Berg,Niladri Basu,Cheryl A. Murphy,Angelika Lampert,J. Kuckelkorn,Tamara Grummt,Henner Hollert +40 more
TL;DR: Cheminformatics and in vitro screening tests could be used as first approach to identify eco-neurotoxic pollutants and a small species test battery could be applied to assess the risks of ecosystems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ingestion and contact with polyethylene microplastics does not cause acute toxicity on marine zooplankton.
Ricardo Beiras,Juan Bellas,Jérôme Cachot,Bettie Cormier,Xavier Cousin,Magnus Engwall,Chiara Gambardella,Francesca Garaventa,Steffen Keiter,F. Le Bihanic,Sara López-Ibáñez,Veronica Piazza,Diego Rial,Tania Tato,Leticia Vidal-Liñán +14 more
TL;DR: The results obtained do not support environmentally relevant risk of microplastics on marine zooplankton and the replacement of these polymers in consumer products must be carefully considered.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ecotoxicological effects of chemical contaminants adsorbed to microplastics in the clam Scrobicularia plana
Sarit O'Donovan,Nélia C. Mestre,Serena Abel,Taina Garcia da Fonseca,Camilla Catarci Carteny,Bettie Cormier,Bettie Cormier,Steffen Keiter,Maria João Bebianno +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of microplastic exposure on the marine biota were investigated in the peppery furrow shell clam Scrobicularia plana, with and without adsorbed contaminants (benzo[a]pyrene - BaP and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid - PFOS).
