Sex Differences in the Adult Human Brain: Evidence from 5216 UK Biobank Participants
Stuart J. Ritchie,Simon R. Cox,Xueyi Shen,Michael V. Lombardo,Michael V. Lombardo,Lianne M. Reus,Clara Alloza,Mathew A. Harris,Helen L Alderson,Stuart Hunter,Emma Neilson,David C. Liewald,Bonnie Auyeung,Heather C. Whalley,Stephen M. Lawrie,Catharine R. Gale,Catharine R. Gale,Mark E. Bastin,Andrew M. McIntosh,Ian J. Deary +19 more
TL;DR: This large-scale study provides a foundation for attempts to understand the causes and consequences of sex differences in adult brain structure and function.
Journal ArticleDOI
Brain age predicts mortality
James H. Cole,Stuart J. Ritchie,Mark E. Bastin,M C Valdés Hernández,S. Muñoz Maniega,Natalie A. Royle,Janie Corley,Alison Pattie,Sarah E. Harris,Qian Zhang,Naomi R. Wray,Paul Redmond,Riccardo E. Marioni,Riccardo E. Marioni,John M. Starr,Simon R. Cox,Joanna M. Wardlaw,David J. Sharp,Ian J. Deary +18 more
TL;DR: This study introduces a clinically-relevant neuroimaging ageing biomarker ‘brain-predicted age’ and demonstrates that combining distinct measurements of biological ageing further helps to determine risk of age-related deterioration and death.
Journal ArticleDOI
Enduring Links From Childhood Mathematics and Reading Achievement to Adult Socioeconomic Status
TL;DR: Results suggest effects of improved early mathematics and reading on SES attainment across the life span, above and beyond the effects of SES at birth.
Journal ArticleDOI
The epigenetic clock is correlated with physical and cognitive fitness in the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936
Riccardo E. Marioni,Sonia Shah,Allan F. McRae,Stuart J. Ritchie,Graciela Muniz-Terrera,Sarah E. Harris,Jude Gibson,Paul Redmond,Simon R. Cox,Alison Pattie,Janie Corley,Adele M. Taylor,Lee Murphy,John M. Starr,Steve Horvath,Peter M. Visscher,Naomi R. Wray,Ian J. Deary +17 more
TL;DR: Markers of physical and mental fitness are associated with the epigenetic clock (lower abilities associated with age acceleration), however, age acceleration does not associate with decline in these measures, at least over a relatively short follow-up.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genomic structural equation modelling provides insights into the multivariate genetic architecture of complex traits.
Andrew D. Grotzinger,Mijke Rhemtulla,Ronald de Vlaming,Ronald de Vlaming,Stuart J. Ritchie,Travis T. Mallard,W. David Hill,Hill F. Ip,Riccardo E. Marioni,Andrew M. McIntosh,Ian J. Deary,Philipp Koellinger,Philipp Koellinger,K. Paige Harden,Michel G. Nivard,Elliot M. Tucker-Drob +15 more
TL;DR: Genetic correlations estimated from genome-wide association studies (GWASs) reveal pervasive pleiotropy across a wide variety of phenotypes, and genomic structural equation modelling (genomic SEM) is introduced, a multivariate method for analysing the joint genetic architecture of complex traits.
