Journal ArticleDOI
Restless legs syndrome: diagnostic criteria, special considerations, and epidemiology. A report from the restless legs syndrome diagnosis and epidemiology workshop at the National Institutes of Health.
Richard P. Allen,Daniel L. Picchietti,Wayne A. Hening,Claudia Trenkwalder,Arthur S. Walters,Jacques Montplaisi +5 more
TL;DR: Modification of the criteria for the diagnosis of restless legs syndrome is modified to better reflect that increased body of knowledge, as well as to clarify slight confusion with the wording of the original criteria.
Journal ArticleDOI
Restless Legs Syndrome Prevalence and Impact: REST General Population Study
Richard P. Allen,Arthur S. Walters,Jacques Montplaisir,Wayne A. Hening,Andrew Myers,Timothy J. Bell,Timothy J. Bell,Luigi Ferini-Strambi +7 more
TL;DR: Clinically significant RLS is common (prevalence, 2.7%), is underdiagnosed, and significantly affects sleep and quality of life.
Journal ArticleDOI
Toward a better definition of the restless legs syndrome
Arthur S. Walters,Michael S. Aldrich,Richard P. Allen,Sonia Ancoli-Israel,David W. Buchholz,Sudhansu Chokroverty,Giorgio Coccagna,Christopher J. Earley,Bruce L. Ehrenberg,T. G. Feest,Wayne A. Hening,Neil B. Kavey,Gilles Lavigne,Joseph F. Lipinski,Elio Lugaresi,Pasquale Montagna,Jacques Montplaisir,Sarah S. Mosko,Wolfgang H. Oertel,Daniel L. Picchietti,Thomas Pollmächer,Renata Shafor,Robert C. Smith,Wenche Telstad,C. Trenkwalder,C. Trenkwalder,Christian von Scheele,J. Catesby Ware,Marco Zucconi +28 more
TL;DR: A large International Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) Study Group has been formed as discussed by the authors, which has taken upon itself the role of definig the clinical features of the RLS, including sleep disturbance, periodic limb movements in sleep and similar involuntary movements while awake, a normal neurological examination in the idiopathic from, a tendency for the symptoms to be worse in middle to older age, and a family history suggestive of an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Epidemiology of Restless Legs Symptoms in Adults
TL;DR: The prevalence of restless legs in the general adult population is high and may be associated with decreased well-being, emphasizing the need for further research and greater medical recognition of this condition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Impact, diagnosis and treatment of restless legs syndrome (RLS) in a primary care population: The REST (RLS epidemiology, symptoms, and treatment) primary care study
Wayne A. Hening,Arthur S. Walters,Arthur S. Walters,Richard P. Allen,Jacques Montplaisir,Andrew Myers,Luigi Ferini-Strambi +6 more
TL;DR: The marked under-diagnosis and inappropriate treatment of RLS indicates that PCPs need better education about this condition, and recognizing how often disrupted sleep results from RLS should improve diagnosis.
