Semiconductor-based Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation

As a fascinating conjugated polymer, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has become a new research hotspot and drawn broad interdisciplinary attention as a metal-free and visible-light-responsive photocatalyst in the arena of solar energy conversion and environmental remediation. This is due to its appealing electronic band structure, high physicochemical stability, and “earth-abundant” nature. This critical review summarizes a panorama of the latest progress related to the design and construction of pristine g-C3N4 and g-C3N4-based nanocomposites, including (1) nanoarchitecture design of bare g-C3N4, such as hard and soft templating approaches, supramolecular preorganization assembly, exfoliation, and template-free synthesis routes, (2) functionalization of g-C3N4 at an atomic level (elemental doping) and molecular level (copolymerization), and (3) modification of g-C3N4 with well-matched energy levels of another semiconductor or a metal as a cocatalyst to form heterojunction nanostructures. Graphitic Carbon Nitride (g-C3N4)-Based Photocatalysts for Artificial Photosynthesis and Environmental Remediation: Are We a Step Closer To Achieving Sustainability?

The family of 2D transition metal carbides, carbonitrides and nitrides (collectively referred to as MXenes) has expanded rapidly since the discovery of Ti3C2 in 2011. The materials reported so far always have surface terminations, such as hydroxyl, oxygen or fluorine, which impart hydrophilicity to their surfaces. About 20 different MXenes have been synthesized, and the structures and properties of dozens more have been theoretically predicted. The availability of solid solutions, the control of surface terminations and a recent discovery of multi-transition-metal layered MXenes offer the potential for synthesis of many new structures. The versatile chemistry of MXenes allows the tuning of properties for applications including energy storage, electromagnetic interference shielding, reinforcement for composites, water purification, gas- and biosensors, lubrication, and photo-, electro- and chemical catalysis. Attractive electronic, optical, plasmonic and thermoelectric properties have also been shown. In this Review, we present the synthesis, structure and properties of MXenes, as well as their energy storage and related applications, and an outlook for future research. More than twenty 2D carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides of transition metals (MXenes) have been synthesized and studied, and dozens more predicted to exist. Highly electrically conductive MXenes show promise in electrical energy storage, electromagnetic interference shielding, electrocatalysis, plasmonics and other applications.

Understanding TiO2 photocatalysis: mechanisms and materials.

Preparation of AgBr/AgBrO3 nanoparticles by impregnation method and their transform into Ag/AgBr under visible-light irradiation

An interatomic potential is proposed for the Cu-Hf-Al system and applied in molecular dynamics/statics simulations. Simulations predict a hexagonal composition region for the Cu-Hf-Al metallic glass formation. Kinetically, a local maximum driving force, defined by energy difference between the solid solution and disordered state, is predicted to be at Cu48Hf41Al11, close to the experimentally measured optimized composition. Moreover, Voronoi tessellation analysis shows that though the icosahedron and icosidihedron are dominant configurations, the fractions of both icosihexahedron and icosioctahedron decrease with increasing Al content, correlating closely with the atomic radii and the heat of mixing of the component metals.

Interatomic potential to calculate the driving force, optimized composition, and atomic structure of the Cu-Hf-Al metallic glasses

Intrinsic triferroicity is essential and highly sought for novel device applications, such as high-density multistate data storage. So far, the intrinsic triferroicity has only been discussed in three-dimensional systems. Herein on the basis of first principles, we report the intrinsic triferroicity in a two-dimensional lattice. Being exfoliatable from the layered bulk, single-layer $\mathrm{Fe}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}\mathrm{H}$ is shown to be an intrinsically triferroic semiconductor, presenting antiferromagnetism, ferroelasticity, and ferroelectricity simultaneously. Moreover, the directional control of its ferroelectric polarization is achievable by 90 \ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} reversible ferroelastic switching. In addition, single-layer $\mathrm{Fe}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}\mathrm{H}$ is identified to harbor in-plane piezoelectric effect. The unveiled phenomena and mechanism of triferroics in this two-dimensional system not only broaden the scientific and technological impact of triferroics but also enable a wide range of nanodevice applications.

Intrinsic triferroicity in a two-dimensional lattice

TiO2 has extensive applications in the fields of renewable energy and environmental protections such as being used as photocatalysts or electron transport layers in solar cells. To achieve highly efficient photocatalytic and photovoltaic applications, ongoing efforts are being devoted to developing novel TiO2-based material structures or compositions, in which a first-principles computational approach is playing an increasing role. In this review article, we discuss recent computational and theoretical studies of structural, energetic, electronic, and optical properties of TiO2-based nanocluster, bulk, and material interface for photocatalytic and photovoltaic applications. We conclude the review with a discussion of future research directions in the field.
