Semiconductor-based Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation

As a fascinating conjugated polymer, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has become a new research hotspot and drawn broad interdisciplinary attention as a metal-free and visible-light-responsive photocatalyst in the arena of solar energy conversion and environmental remediation. This is due to its appealing electronic band structure, high physicochemical stability, and “earth-abundant” nature. This critical review summarizes a panorama of the latest progress related to the design and construction of pristine g-C3N4 and g-C3N4-based nanocomposites, including (1) nanoarchitecture design of bare g-C3N4, such as hard and soft templating approaches, supramolecular preorganization assembly, exfoliation, and template-free synthesis routes, (2) functionalization of g-C3N4 at an atomic level (elemental doping) and molecular level (copolymerization), and (3) modification of g-C3N4 with well-matched energy levels of another semiconductor or a metal as a cocatalyst to form heterojunction nanostructures. Graphitic Carbon Nitride (g-C3N4)-Based Photocatalysts for Artificial Photosynthesis and Environmental Remediation: Are We a Step Closer To Achieving Sustainability?

The family of 2D transition metal carbides, carbonitrides and nitrides (collectively referred to as MXenes) has expanded rapidly since the discovery of Ti3C2 in 2011. The materials reported so far always have surface terminations, such as hydroxyl, oxygen or fluorine, which impart hydrophilicity to their surfaces. About 20 different MXenes have been synthesized, and the structures and properties of dozens more have been theoretically predicted. The availability of solid solutions, the control of surface terminations and a recent discovery of multi-transition-metal layered MXenes offer the potential for synthesis of many new structures. The versatile chemistry of MXenes allows the tuning of properties for applications including energy storage, electromagnetic interference shielding, reinforcement for composites, water purification, gas- and biosensors, lubrication, and photo-, electro- and chemical catalysis. Attractive electronic, optical, plasmonic and thermoelectric properties have also been shown. In this Review, we present the synthesis, structure and properties of MXenes, as well as their energy storage and related applications, and an outlook for future research. More than twenty 2D carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides of transition metals (MXenes) have been synthesized and studied, and dozens more predicted to exist. Highly electrically conductive MXenes show promise in electrical energy storage, electromagnetic interference shielding, electrocatalysis, plasmonics and other applications.

Understanding TiO2 photocatalysis: mechanisms and materials.

In ELID (Electrolytic In-process Dressing) operations, the setting of starting point is quite important for reducing waste of time and for achiving high quality surface. In this study, the authors proposed a new describing mode for ELID grinding. The oxide layer formed on the wheel surface was divided to four sub-layer: porous-layer, polishing-layer, grinding-layer and interface-layer. The influence of the oxide layer on material removal rates and surface properties was investigated. It was found that, olny the oxide layer with thickness less than 24'm has capability of material removal. In ELID grinding, optimal thickness of the oxide layer is about 8~9'm. And the oxide layer with thickness of 4~9'm is suitable for grinding.

A Fundamental Study on Optimal Oxide Layer of Fine Diamond Wheels during ELID Grinding Process

Composite of lead-free halide perovskite Cs3Bi2Br9 with TiO2 as an efficient photocatalyst for C(sp3)−H bond activation

At present, creating sizable spontaneous valley polarization is at the center of the study of valleytronics, which, however, is still a huge challenge. In this work, we determined that the ferromagnetic Fe(OH)2 monolayer of the hexagonal lattice is a highly appealing candidate for valleytronics by using first-principles calculations in conjunction with tight-binding model analysis. In light of the simultaneous inversion symmetry breaking and time-reversal symmetry breaking, we illustrated that the strong spin-orbit coupling and robust ferromagnetic exchange interaction cause a spontaneous valley polarization as large as 67 meV for Fe(OH)2, indicative of room-temperature application. In addition, the physics of valley-selective circular dichroism, spin/valley Hall effects, and topological phase transition were also discussed.

Spontaneous Valley Polarization in a Ferromagnetic Fe(OH)2 Monolayer.

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected entities that are promising for information storage and processing. Currently, an essential challenge for future advances of skyrmionic devices lies in achieving effective control of skyrmion properties. Here, through first-principles and Monte-Carlo simulations, we report the identification of nontrivial topological magnetism in two-dimensional multiferroics of Co2NF2. Because of ferroelectricity, monolayer Co2NF2 exhibits a large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. This together with exchange interaction can stabilize magnetic skyrmions with the size of sub-10 nm under a moderate magnetic field. Importantly, arising from the magnetoelectric coupling effect, the chirality of magnetic skyrmions is ferroelectrically tunable, producing the four-fold degenerate skyrmions. When interfacing with monolayer MoSe2, the creation and annihilation of magnetic skyrmions, as well as phase transition between skyrmion and skyrmion lattice, can be realized in a ferroelectrically controllable fashion. A dimensionless parameter κ' is further proposed as the criterion for stabilizing magnetic skyrmions in such multiferroic lattices. Our work greatly enriches the two-dimensional skyrmionics and multiferroics research.

Ferroelectrically tunable magnetic skyrmions in two-dimensional multiferroics.

The discovery of quantum spin Hall effect has ignited the field of topological physics with vast variety of exotic properties. Here, we present the emergence of doubled quantum spin Hall effect in two dimensions characterized with a high spin Chern number of CS = 2 and two pairs of helical edge states. Although is overlooked and invisible in topological quantum chemistry and symmetry indicator theory, the already experimentally synthesized α-antimonene and α-bismuthene are revealed as realistic material candidates of predicted topological states with band inversions emerging at generic k-points, rather than the high-symmetry momenta. Remarkably, the nontrivial energy gap can be as large as 464 meV for α-bismuthene, indicating the high possibility of room-temperature observation of the doubled quantum spin Hall effect. Moreover, a four-band effective model is constructed to demonstrate further the feasibility of attaining this type of nontrivial topology. Our results not only uncover a novel topological character of antimony and bismuth, but will also facilitate the experimental characterization of the previously overlooked hidden topology.
