Journal ArticleDOI
Quantitative phase imaging in biomedicine
TL;DR: This Review presents the main principles of operation and representative basic and clinical science applications of quantitative phase imaging, and aims to provide a critical and objective overview of this dynamic research field.
Journal ArticleDOI
Refractive index maps and membrane dynamics of human red blood cells parasitized by Plasmodium falciparum.
YongKeun Park,Monica Diez-Silva,Gabriel Popescu,George Lykotrafitis,Wonshik Choi,Michael S. Feld,Subra Suresh +6 more
TL;DR: Two intrinsic indicators: the refractive index and membrane fluctuations in P. falciparum-invaded human RBCs are investigated and offer potential avenues for identifying, through cell membrane dynamics, pathological states that cause or accompany human diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Quantitative phase imaging techniques for the study of cell pathophysiology: from principles to applications.
KyeoReh Lee,Kyoohyun Kim,JaeHwang Jung,Ji Han Heo,Sangyeon Cho,SangYun Lee,Gyuyoung Chang,YoungJu Jo,HyunJoo Park,YongKeun Park +9 more
TL;DR: The principles of QPI are presented and some of the recent applications ranging from cell homeostasis to infectious diseases and cancer are highlighted, to provide important insight on how the QPI techniques potentially improve the study of cell pathophysiology.
Journal ArticleDOI
Measurement of red blood cell mechanics during morphological changes
YongKeun Park,Catherine A. Best,Kamran Badizadegan,Kamran Badizadegan,Ramachandra R. Dasari,Michael S. Feld,Tatiana Kuriabova,Mark L. Henle,Alex J. Levine,Gabriel Popescu +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors apply a noncontact optical interferometric technique to quantify the thermal fluctuations of RBC membranes with 3nm accuracy over a broad range of spatial and temporal frequencies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Metabolic remodeling of the human red blood cell membrane
YongKeun Park,Catherine A. Best,Thorsten Auth,Nir S. Gov,Samuel A. Safran,Gabriel Popescu,Subra Suresh,Michael S. Feld +7 more
TL;DR: It is presented conclusive evidence that the presence of adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) facilitates non-equilibrium dynamic fluctuations in the RBC membrane that are highly correlated with the biconcave shape of RBCs.
