TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a network element comprising a control plane including stream tracer logic and a data plane coupled to the control plane, where the data plane includes forwarding logic to forward a unit of network data from an ingress interface to an egress interface.
Abstract: Various embodiments of a network element comprising a control plane including stream tracer logic are described herein. The network element additionally includes a data plane coupled to the control plane, where the data plane includes forwarding logic to forward a unit of network data from an ingress interface to an egress interface. The stream tracer logic can be configured to cause marking logic to mark selected units of network data for to be counted by counting logic and to cause the counting logic to count marked units of network data. The stream tracer logic can determine whether units of network data are dropped within the forwarding logic via comparison of an ingress count of the marked units of network data with an egress count of the marked units of network data.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a network system comprising a set of network elements to interconnect a group of host devices, and a network management device to monitor and configure the set of elements to enable dynamic insertion of a service device into the network.
Abstract: Various embodiments are described herein to enable physical topology independent dynamic insertion of a service device into a network. One embodiment provides for a network system comprising a set of network elements to interconnect a set of host devices, the set of network elements having a physical topology defined by the physical links between network elements in the set of network elements, and a network management device including a network management module to monitor and configure the set of network elements, the network management module to configure the set of network elements to enable dynamic insertion of a network service device into the network to logically couple to one or more host devices in the set of host devices to the network service device independently of a location of the one or more host devices and the network service device within the physical topology.

TL;DR: In this article, a device locates a bucket for the data in a shared memory hash table and retrieves an initial value of a version of the bucket, and if the initial value is odd, the device copies the data from a lookaside buffer of the writer to a local buffer for the reader.
Abstract: A method and apparatus of a device that reads and writes data using a shared memory hash table and a lookaside buffer is described. In an exemplary embodiment, a device locates a bucket for the data in a shared memory hash table, where a writer updates the shared memory hash table and a reader that is one of a plurality of readers reads from the shared memory hash table. The device further retrieves an initial value of a version of the bucket. If the initial value of the version is odd, the device copies the data from a lookaside buffer of the writer to a local buffer for the reader, wherein the lookaside buffer stores a copy of the data while the bucket is being modified.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method and apparatus of a device that updates a software image for a network element is described, where the network element includes a plurality of hardware forwarding engines and a control plane.
Abstract: A method and apparatus of a device that updates a software image for a network element is described. In an exemplary embodiment, a device receives a signal to update the network element with the new software image, where the network element includes a plurality of hardware forwarding engines and a control plane. The device further boots the control plane with the new software image, where the booting is accomplished without restarting the control plane. In one embodiment, the device boots the control plane by chain booting from a current software image to the new software image. The device additionally restarts and reconfigures the plurality of hardware forwarding engines. In a further embodiment, the device additionally prefills one or more queues in the hardware forwarding engines with keep-alive messages. These keep-alive messages are transmitted during the time that the control plane is being restarted. In a further embodiment, the hardware forwarding engines are reconfigured without restarting them.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a system and method for route health injection using virtual tunnel endpoints, which includes detecting, by a virtual tunnel endpoint (VTEP), that a new host is connected to the VTEP and providing the new route to a default gateway for the new host.
Abstract: A system and method for route health injection using virtual tunnel endpoints. The method includes detecting, by a virtual tunnel endpoint (VTEP), that a new host is connected to the VTEP, where the VTEP is executing on the network device. The method further includes, based on the detecting, generating by the VTEP, a new route for the new host, where the new route is at least a longer match for the new host than currently existing routes for the new host, and providing the new route to a default gateway for the new host.
