TL;DR: This chapter focuses on green passive optical networks, the wireline aspect discoursed in great details on how to green broadband access networks.
Abstract: The future sees a clear trend of data rate increase in both wireless and wireline broadband access. These access networks may experience a dramatic increase of energy consumption in provisioning higher bandwidth as well as for other reasons [8, 28, 61]. For example, to guarantee a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver side for accurate recovery of high data rate signals, advanced transmitters with high transmitting signal power and advanced modulation schemes are required, thus consequently resulting in high energy consumption of the devices. Also, to provision a higher data rate, more power will be consumed by electronic circuits in network devices to facilitate fast data processing. Besides, high-speed data processing incurs fast heat buildup and high heat dissipation that further incurs high energy consumption for cooling. It is estimated that the access network energy consumption increases linearly with the provisioned data rate. It has also been reported that the LTE base station (BS) consumes more energy in data processing than the 3G UMTS systems [108, 119], and the 10 Gb/s Ethernet PON (EPON) system consumes much more energy than the 1 Gb/s EPON system. This chapter focuses on green passive optical networks, the wireline aspect discoursed in great details on how to green broadband access networks [30].

TL;DR: The main contribution of the present work is the proposal of a data transformation service that provides measurement correlation that is used to enable cooperation features in measurement federations, while decreasing resource consumption.
Abstract: The diversity of services that operate in the Internet has increased significantly in the last years. Performance problems in these services cause important financial losses. To ensure that these problems do not occur, service levels need to be monitored. One of the main techniques for such monitoring involves the use of active measurement mechanisms. However, these mechanisms are expensive in terms of resources consumption due to the activation of measurement sessions. Measurement sessions usually cover only a fraction of what could be measured, which leads to service level problems being missed. Measurement federations can help network administrators in different tasks, such as controlling the activation of active measurement sessions. In this context, measurement correlation can be deployed in order to improve this control in such federations. The main contribution of the present work is the proposal of a data transformation service that provides measurement correlation. This service is used to enable cooperation features in measurement federations, while decreasing resource consumption. Besides that, statistical tests that can be used to compose such correlation are presented. The proposed solution is evaluated using an active measurement dataset from the Brazilian National Research and Education Network (Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa - RNP). Our results provide insights regarding measurement correlation from federated measurement points and can be used for the design of better application to control active measurement sessions.

TL;DR: In this paper, a network element including an access control list processing module is described, where each rule of a subsection is mutually exclusive of each other rule in the subsection, and the network element may then make forwarding decisions for network data using the set of subsections of rules.
Abstract: Described herein are various embodiments of a network element including an access control list processing module to process an access control list of the network element. In one embodiment, the access control list processing module converts the access control list into set of subsections of rules, where each rule of a subsection mutually exclusive of each other rule in the subsection. The network element may then make forwarding decisions for network data using the set of subsections of rules. In one embodiment, semantics preserving transformations can be applied to rules and data to enable more efficient processing of filtering or rules.

TL;DR: In this paper, a network element includes a tunneling endpoint having a virtual address, which is configured to receive an address resolution reply that has a destination MAC (media access control) address matching the virtual address and is from a network device in a first network.
Abstract: A network element is provided. The network element includes a tunneling endpoint having a virtual address. The tunneling endpoint is configured to receive an address resolution reply that has a destination MAC (media access control) address matching the virtual address of the tunneling endpoint and is from a network device in a first network that includes the tunneling endpoint. The tunneling endpoint is further configured to send the address resolution reply via an interconnect to a further tunneling endpoint in a further network. A method for address resolution in virtual extensible networks is also provided.

TL;DR: In this paper, an apparatus for recording data received in serial form is presented, including a data logging port, an external access port, a first memory, and a command memory and a state machine executing on a processor internal to the apparatus.
Abstract: An apparatus for recording data received in serial form is provided. The apparatus includes a data logging port, an external access port, a first memory, and a command memory and a state machine executing on a processor internal to the apparatus, that writes the data, received in serial form through the data logging port, to the first memory while locking out access to the first memory via the bus interface and the command memory. The bus interface and the command memory are configured to read the first memory, when not locked out, in accordance with a command placed in the command memory through the bus interface. A method performed by the apparatus is also provided.
