TL;DR: In 2018-2019, the government of Ecuador sponsored a series of workshops to examine the conservation status of Ecuador's freshwater fishes as discussed by the authors, where concerns were identified for 35 species, most of which are native to the Amazon region and overfishing of Amazonian pimelodid catfishes emerged as a major issue.
Abstract: Freshwater fish communities in Ecuador exhibit some of the highest levels of diversity and endemism in the Neotropics. Unfortunately, aquatic ecosystems in the country are under serious threat and conditions are deteriorating. In 2018-19, the government of Ecuador sponsored a series of workshops to examine the conservation status of Ecuador's freshwater fishes. Concerns were identified for 35 species, most of which are native to the Amazon region, and overfishing of Amazonian pimelodid catfishes emerged as a major issue. However, much of the information needed to make decisions across fish groups and regions was not available, hindering the process and highlighting the need for a review of the conservation threats to Ecuador's freshwater fishes. Here, we review how the physical alteration of rivers, deforestation, wetland and floodplain degradation, agricultural and urban water pollution, mining, oil extraction, dams, overfishing, introduced species and climate change are affecting freshwater fishes in Ecuador. Although many of these factors affect fishes throughout the Neotropics, the lack of data on Ecuadorian fish communities is staggering and highlights the urgent need for more research. We also make recommendations, including the need for proper enforcement of existing environmental laws, restoration of degraded aquatic ecosystems, establishment of a national monitoring system for freshwater ecosystems, investment in research to fill gaps in knowledge, and encouragement of public engagement in citizen science and conservation efforts. Freshwater fishes are an important component of the cultural and biological legacy of the Ecuadorian people. Conserving them for future generations is critical.

31 Oct 2013TL;DR: The main objective is to mathematically model the ablation associated with delivery of radiofrequency (RF) energy to treat atrial fibrillation in order to control the temperature rise in the esophageal lumen and enable the study of temperature behavior whenever in space or in time.
Abstract: Catheter ablation along the posterior aspect of the left atrium has a small but real risk of esophageal perforation. This left atrioesophageal fistula formation is associated with multiple gaseous and/or septic embolic events causing cerebral and myocardial damage. The main objective is to mathematically model the ablation associated with delivery of radiofrequency (RF) energy to treat atrial fibrillation in order to control the temperature rise in the esophageal lumen. We model the heat exchange problem in a time-dependent multi-region for the catheter ablation therapy, with particular application to RF thermal ablation on the atrial tissue. From the selected set of geometric and operational parameters, benchmark calculations result in graphical representations. The proposed solutions enable whether quantitative or qualitative the study of temperature behavior whenever in space or in time. These enhance the physical understanding of what factors can affect the esophageal temperature and how to most accurately measure it. The model is sufficiently explicit to be, in turn, applied to different performances of one ablation procedure, or even to other thermal techniques.

TL;DR: The authors reviewed 2859 English language news items posted on the Kavkaz Center during 2001-04 and found that the relegation of the nationalist struggle to a secondary role by the religious battle waged by the North Caucasus insurgency is one of the fundamental differences between the First and Second War in Chechnya.
Abstract: Typically, when analysing contemporary Russian–Chechen conflicts, the relegation of the nationalist struggle to a secondary role by the religious battle waged by the North Caucasus insurgency is pinpointed as one of the fundamental differences between the First and Second War in Chechnya. This article discusses how it was reflected in one of the most important media of the Chechen Islamist insurgency: the Kavkaz Center. To this end, 2859 English language news items posted on the website during 2001–04 were reviewed using media frame analysis.
