Abstract: We examine the response of domestic Philippine banks to the relaxation of foreign entry regulations that occurred in the Philippines. We find evidence that foreign bank entry is associated with a reduction in interest rate spreads and bank profits, but only for those domestic banks that are affiliated to a family business group. Foreign entry corresponds more generally with improvements in operating efficiencies, but a deterioration of loan portfolios. Overall, we conclude that foreign competition compels domestic banks to be more efficient, to focus operations due to increased risk, and to become less dependent on relationship-based banking practices.

Abstract: A Stroop interference task was used to test the hypothesis that people in different cultures are differentially attuned to verbal content vis-a-vis vocal tone in comprehending emotional words. In Study 1, Americans showed greater difficulty ignoring verbal content than ignoring vocal tone (which reveals an attentional bias for verbal content); but Japanese showed greater difficulty ignoring vocal tone than ignoring verbal content (which reveals a bias for vocal tone). In Study 2, Tagalog-English bilinguals in the Philippines showed an attentional bias for vocal tone regardless of the language used, suggesting that the effect is largely cultural rather than linguistic. Implications for culture-and-cognition research are discussed.

Abstract: Young adults from three Western (Canada, U.S.A., and New Zealand) and three East Asian (The Philippines, South Korea and Japan) nations completed a questionnaire regarding their perceptions of interactions with family elders, non-family elders, and same-age peers. Results showed that East Asians perceived family elders to be as accommodating as same-age peers, whereas Westerners perceived family elders as more accommodating than their same-age peers. Participants in both cultural blocks indicated an obligation to be most deferential towards non-family elders, followed by family elders, followed by same-age peers. Whereas both groups perceived interactions with same-age peers more positively than with the two older groups, the Western group perceived the older age groups more positively than did East Asians. Intergenerational communication is reportedly be more problematic than intragenerational communication and, consistent with previous findings, this pattern is more evident in East Asian nations on some variables.

TL;DR: In this article, an ANN model with input parameters consisting of the unconfined compressive strength, core diameter, column height, yield strength of lateral reinforcement, volumetric ratio of lateral reinforced, tie spacing, and longitudinal steel ratio was found to be acceptable in predicting the confined compressive strengths and corresponding strain of circular concrete columns subject to limitations in the training data.
Abstract: The application of artificial neural networks (ANN) to predict the confined compressive strength and corresponding strain of circular concrete columns is explored. Using available data from past experiments, an ANN model with input parameters consisting of the unconfined compressive strength, core diameter, column height, yield strength of lateral reinforcement, volumetric ratio of lateral reinforcement, tie spacing, and longitudinal steel ratio was found to be acceptable in predicting the confined compressive strength and corresponding strain of circular concrete columns subject to limitations in the training data. The study shows the importance of validating the ANN models in simulating physical processes especially when data are limited. The ANN model was also compared to some analytical models and was found to perform well.

TL;DR: The study showed that consumption of a multiple-micronutrient-fortified beverage for 16 weeks had significant effects on iron status, iodine status, physical fitness, and cognitive performance among iron- and/or iodine-deficient Filipino schoolchildren.
Abstract: This study aimed to determine the effect of a multiple-micronutrient-fortified beverage on the micronutrient status, physical fitness, and cognitive performance of schoolchildren. The study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of schoolchildren assigned to receive either the fortified or nonfortified beverage with or without anthelmintic therapy. Data on hemoglobin level, urinary iodine excretion (UIE) level, physical fitness, and cognitive performance were collected at baseline and at 16 weeks post-intervention. The fortified beverage significantly improved iron status among the subjects that had hemoglobin levels < 11 g/dl at baseline. The proportion of children who remained moderately to severely anemic was significantly lower among those given the fortified beverage. In the groups that received the fortified product, the median UIE level increased, whereas among those who received the placebo beverage, the median UIE level was reduced significantly. Iron- and/or iodine-deficient subjects who received the fortified beverage showed significant improvements in fitness (post-exercise reduction of heart rate) and cognitive performance (nonverbal mental ability score). The study showed that consumption of a multiple-micronutrient-fortified beverage for 16 weeks had significant effects on iron status, iodine status, physical fitness, and cognitive performance among iron- and/or iodine-deficient Filipino schoolchildren. Anthelmintic therapy improved iron status of anemic children and iodine status of the iron-adequate children at baseline but it had no effect on physical fitness and cognitive performance. The results from the clinical study showed that a multiple-micronutrient-fortified beverage could play an important role in preventing and controlling micronutrient deficiencies.

TL;DR: The results indicated that theLPQ was a valid instrument to assess the learning approaches of non-low-achieving Filipino college students and the Deep and Achieving subscale scores of the LPQ were positively related to academic achievement even when the effects of school ability and prior academic achievement were controlled.
Abstract: Research has shown that a critical variable in determining academic achievement in different cultures and educational systems is approaches to learning. In this study, the author sought to determine whether this variable influences academic achievement among Filipino college students. The Learning Process Questionnaire (LPQ; J. B. Biggs, 1987) was used to assess approaches to learning. The results indicated that (a) the LPQ was a valid instrument to assess the learning approaches of non-low-achieving Filipino college students; (b) the Deep and Achieving subscale scores of the LPQ were positively related to academic achievement even when the effects of school ability and prior academic achievement were controlled; and (c) with some slight exceptions, the relationship between the LPQ scale scores and academic achievement were generally similar between male and female Filipino students. Implications for the study of student approaches to learning in different cultures and educational systems are discussed.

TL;DR: The results demonstrate the babesiacidial activities of these compounds and suggest their chemotherapeutic potential for the treatment of equine babesioses.
Abstract: The antifungal agents clotrimazole (CLT) and ketoconazole (KC) and the herbicide clodinafop-propargyl (CP) inhibit growth of Plasmodium sp., Toxoplasma sp., and Trypanosoma sp. In the present study, we evaluated these drugs against the in vitro growth of the equine protozoan parasites Babesia equi and B. caballi. Clotrimazole (IC50: 2 and 17 μM), KC (IC50: 6 and 22 μM), and CP (IC50: 450 and 354 μM) were effective growth inhibitors. Interestingly, intraerythrocytic KC-treated Babesia sp. were observed to be in immediate contact with the plasma fraction of the blood in electron microscopy. These results demonstrate the babesiacidial activities of these compounds and suggest their chemotherapeutic potential for the treatment of equine babesioses.

TL;DR: The authors used a concordance of feedback sheets to investigate the way tutors use institutional discourse in written feedback sheets on a part-time MA(Ed) and the functions performed by the written feedback.
Abstract: Current Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education guidelines highlight the necessity for institutional assessment to be clear and transparent. Whilst institutions spend much energy on making sure that criteria on which they assess work are published and clear, much of the feedback to students on different courses is discursive in nature and consists of both formative and summative assessment. Students also receive information about grades and criteria from a variety of institutional documents. This paper uses a concordance of feedback sheets to investigate the way that tutors use institutional discourse in written feedback sheets on a part-time MA(Ed) and the functions performed by the written feedback. The paper finds a high degree of congruence between the institutional and tutor corpora. Both corpora place considerable emphasis on academic conventions, yet this is not reflected in the criteria used for assessment.

TL;DR: The significant increase in total Bc population in ecdysis relative to nonengorged ticks clearly point to blastogenesis of Bc taking place during the ecdysial phase and Bc’s important role in the process of tissue remodeling.
Abstract: The ultrastructure and characteristics of hemocytes of argasid tick species, Ornithodoros moubata, during the ecdysdial phase are herein presented. Hemocyte classes/populations characterized based on their affinity with Giemsa stain and ultrastructural differences comprised the prohemocytes, nongranular cells (Nc), eosinophilic granular cells (Ec), basophilic granular cells (Bc), and unidentified cells. Significant changes/shift in the ratio of hemocyte classes/population was apparent in ticks before and after the ecdysial phase. The granule-scant basophilic granular cells (sBc) constituted the most abundant hemocyte population in the ecdysial phase. Nymphs in ecdysis showed increases in Nc and sBc and decrease in Ec, a phenomenon that was reversed in unengorged nymphs and adults ticks. The significant increase in total Bc population in ecdysis relative to nonengorged ticks clearly point to blastogenesis of Bc taking place during the ecdysial phase and Bc’s important role in the process of tissue...

TL;DR: A visually interactive method for reusing motions and models, by adjusting the query results from animation databases for new situations while at the same time, keeping the desired properties of the original models and motions is proposed.
Abstract: We consider a repository of animation models and motions that can be reused to generate new animation sequences. For instance, a user can retrieve an animation of a dog kicking its leg (in air) and manipulate the result to generate a new animation where the dog is kicking a ball. In this particular example, inverse kinematics technique can be used to retarget the kicking motion of a dog to a ball. This approach of reusing models and motions to generate new animation sequences can be facilitated by operations such as querying of animation databases for required models and motions, and manipulation of the query results to meet new constraints. However, manipulation operations such as motion retargeting are quite complex in nature. Hence, there is a need for visualizing the queries on animation databases as well as the manipulation operations on the query results. In this paper, we propose a visually interactive method for reusing motions and models, by adjusting the query results from animation databases for new situations while at the same time, keeping the desired properties of the original models and motions. Here, a user first queries for animation objects, i.e., geometric models and motions. Then, the user interactively makes new animations by visually manipulating the query results. Depending on the orders in which the GUIs (Graphical User Interfaces) are invoked and the parameters are changed, the system automatically generates a sequence of operations, a list of SQL-like syntax commands, and applies it to the query results of motions and models. With the help of visualization tools, the user can view the changes before accepting them.

TL;DR: In this article, a comparison between midlatitude (Florence, Italy, 43.60°N) and polar (Dumont d'Urville, Antarctica, 66.68°S) cirrus showed a lower mean depolarization and a higher in-cloud uniformity of cloud depolarisation for polar clouds in the (−80, −50°C) temperature range.
Abstract: [1] LIDAR depolarization is commonly used for discriminating liquid and ice particles. Since depolarization depends in a complicated manner on particle shape and size, in-cloud variability of depolarization has been used as an indicator of the microphysical homogeneity of cirrus. The comparison between midlatitude (Florence, Italy, 43. 60°N) and polar (Dumont d'Urville, Antarctica, 66. 68°S) cirrus showed a lower mean depolarization and a higher in-cloud uniformity of cloud depolarization for polar clouds in the (−80, −50°C) temperature range. A wider in-cloud variability of depolarization was observed in polar clouds at higher temperatures (−50, −30°C), reflecting the presence of supercooled liquid layers. The large in-cloud variability of depolarization in Florence cirrus could be explained with a microphysics that is dynamically and chemically perturbed as compared with the polar site. Aged jet contrails are, in fact, present in many Florence cirrus records.

TL;DR: This work proposes a learner agent concept that allows a profile to encompass multiple learning activities and discusses how the learnerAgent is used as the student model of an ITS.
Abstract: Educational systems such as intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) are computer programs that provide customized and adaptive learning according to learner's needs, behavior, and learning situation. Most implementations of these systems are built from scratch and are set to tackle a specific domain or a programming concept (e.g. Johnson, 1990). As a result, ITSs limit the use of learner's profile in one tutoring system. We propose a learner agent concept that allows a profile to encompass multiple learning activities. We discuss how the learner agent is used as the student model of an ITS. We also focus on how the learner agent collects and stores information into this profile.

TL;DR: The Widrow-Hoff gradient descent error correction algorithm is introduced that can improve the memory capacities of the various models and a potential application of these models as data fusion systems is explored.
Abstract: The Hopfield and bi-directional associative memory (BAM) models are well developed and carefully studied models for associative memory that are patterned after the memory structure of the animal brain. Their basic limitation is that they can only perform associations between at most two sets of patterns. Several different models for generalized associative memory are proposed. These models are all extensions of the Hopfield and BAM models that can perform multiple associations. Extensive software simulations are conducted to evaluate the different models, using memory capacity as the basis for comparing their performance. The use of the Widrow-Hoff gradient descent error correction algorithm is introduced that can improve the memory capacities of the various models. A potential application of these models as data fusion systems is explored.

Abstract: This research determined the profile of the professors’ level of appropriateness in test construction in University of Perpetual Help Laguna. It was noted that the practical rules of test item construction is formulated on the basis of years of experience in preparing items and empirical evaluation of responses. Thus, the level of appropriateness in test construction correlated with the actual years of experience in teaching was investigated. There were 33 college professors who were surveyed in this study. The survey determined their tendency to follow general principles, guidelines and procedure in test construction. The results indicate that majority of the professors (54.54%) had an average level of appropriateness in test construction with a mean value of 24.76. The result also revealed that there is no significant relationship between the level of appropriateness in test construction and the actual years of teaching experience. This is due to the adequate training and exposure that new professors had in test construction.

TL;DR: To make such implementation practicable, the heart of its compression algorithm - the discrete cosine transform, quantization, and variable length coding, are analyzed carefully and fast implementations that do not considerably reduce image quality are incorporated in the codec.
Abstract: The development of multimedia systems, which can handle voice and video, is fast growing. Image and video capacity are the essential components of a multimedia system. Representing digital video requires large amount of data, thus, video compression is necessary. In this research composition, the H.261 video compression standard is examined and a video compression algorithm based on the said standard is implemented. Application of H.261 compression algorithms are done with efficiency in mind to provide the least compromise between the computational speed and compression ratio. To make such implementation practicable, the heart of its compression algorithm - the discrete cosine transform, quantization, and variable length coding, are analyzed carefully and fast implementations that do not considerably reduce image quality are incorporated in the codec.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the financial and operational performance of commercial banks that were privatized in the Philippines and found that there was a significant difference in mean return on sales, return on assets, real sales and total employment.
Abstract: It is widely believed that a great deal of the privatization efforts of governments started in the United Kingdom during the Thatcher Administration. Records show that the first effort to privatize government enterprises started in the Federal Republic of Germany during the time of Prime Minister Adenaur. One of the most remarkable aspects of the privatization efforts of governments is how similar their objectives are to that of Thatcher's. Raising revenue is the primary goal. Apart from this, governments likewise consider the more important objective of improving the financial and operating performance of privatized firm by exposing it to market forces. Thus privatization is also expected to increase the firm's profitability; to increase its operating efficiency; to allow the firm to increase its investment spending; to increase its output; and to maintain employment levels in order to accomplish the just cited objectives, although governments expect employment levels to decline. The financial and operational performance of commercial banks that were privatized in the Philippines was studied. Four banks before privatization and only three banks after privatization, due to the merger of two banks, were considered. The event study flow of analysis was utilized, i.e., the financial and operational performance of the banks three years before privatization was compared with their performance three years after privatization. Major financial measures of profitability, operating efficiency, capital investment spending, output changes, employment changes, leverage charges and dividend payout were considered. Wilcoxon rank sum test and t-test for differences in means were utilized. When the major financial ratios were considered, the Wilcoxon rank sum test results showed that there was significant difference in the median performance before and after privatization in real sales. We applied the t-test for differences in average performance before and after privatization of the bank. Results showed significant differences in mean return on sales, return on assets, real sales and total employment. At this point, Philippine banks that were privatized can already claim substantial improvements in their operational and financial performance.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the relationship between teaching and learning and attempt to explain the learning process and the factors that affect the variation in the performance of students are also explained.
Abstract: This report presents the relationship between teaching and learning and attempts to explain the learning process. The contemporary perspective for effective information processing and tasks of educators are included to provide further explanation of the teaching and learning Process. The factors that affect the variation in the performance of students are also explained. Different Instructional Models are also presented grounded on the beliefs of the cognitive, behaviorist, and humanist approach in learning. In the school setting all educators are concerned with two important variables; learning and teaching. It is the primary concern of all educators that students at the end of the course or a particular session will learn something out of it. Coinciding with this idea is making learning take place successfully for each learner. To make learning successful, there should be a match in the teaching style with the learning style of each student through varied techniques. Teaching and learning coincide with one another in a way that learning becomes successful if facilitated with better teaching.
