TL;DR: A framework for the ownership structures of electronic markets is developed and different alternatives are compared by using a case study in the automotive industry to contrast different alternatives.
Abstract: In this paper we develop a framework for the ownership structures of electronic markets and contrast different alternatives by using a case study in the automotive industry. Focus is General Motors’ decision to join the industry electronic market place Covisint and Volkswagen’s decision to build an individual solution. Building on multiple theories from inter-organizational relationship formation we analyze the advantages and disadvantages of private exchanges vs. consortium-based exchanges vs. third party exchanges and illustrate these within our case working towards a comprehensive contingency framework.

01 Jan 1990TL;DR: In this article, an expert system for the configuration of special machines is described, where the static domain knowledge is represented in the system by objects that are hierarchically organized in a part-of-a hierarchy that forms a model of the machine, and in several is-a hierarchies for the different types of machines and of its parts.
Abstract: An expert system for the configuration of special machines is described. The static domain knowledge is represented in the system by objects that are hierarchically organized in a part-of hierarchy that forms a model of the machine, and in several is-a hierarchies for the different types of machines and of its parts. The configuration knowledge consists of functions and relations between parameters representing mechanical laws and of heuristic rules. Both are represented as constraints that are attached to the objects in the model. The configuration process is a stepwise refinement of the model until all parameter values are determined. It is performed by direct evaluation of the constraints and is supported by a dependency controller. The search is guided by control strategies, the most important one is preferring standard solutions. The configuration system includes a simple diagnosis component and a special component for the feedback from diagnosis to configuration.

TL;DR: A survey among 1450 service firms, each employing more than 500 employees, from different industries (e.g., wholesale and retail, transportation and communication, financial services, IT and consultancy) was used to collect the data.
Abstract: The primary objectives of this study were to analyse the role of innovations in the service sector, to analyse how innovation activities are organised and to identify the factors of success. A survey among 1450 service firms, each employing more than 500 employees, from different industries (e.g., wholesale and retail, transportation and communication, financial services, IT and consultancy) was used to collect the data. The findings indicate that a defined innovation strategy, the existence of an innovation management system, an innovation-oriented corporate culture and a clear performance measurement system for new services contribute strongest to the success of new services and to the overall success of the company.
