TL;DR: It is conceivable that the hormone affects certain muscles through an increased (sexual or general) activity by way of the central nervous system, or because of the release of another hormone, or secondarily through some change of general metabolism.
Abstract: IT is not known whether the “anabolic” action of the androgenic hormone testosterone1, especially on muscular growth and metabolism, can be explained by the presence and the possible metabolism and “receptors” of the hormone in muscles. There are indeed several categories of muscles which, when dependent on androgens, may or may not respond directly to testosterone. It is conceivable that the hormone affects certain muscles through an increased (sexual or general) activity by way of the central nervous system, or because of the release of another hormone, or secondarily through some change of general metabolism.

TL;DR: Since 1965, 359 parenteral injections of benzodiazepines were performed during polygraphic control in 220 epileptic children.
Abstract: SUMMARY Since 1965, 359 parenteral injections of benzodiazepines were performed during polygraphic control in 220 epileptic children. In 5 patients, who suffered with the syndrome of Lennox-Gastaut, i.v. injection of a benzodiazepine (diazepam or Nitrazepam®) was followed immediately by numerous tonic seizures, both subclinical and clinical, amounting to true tonic status. All the patients with one exception were at the time of the injection in a state of confusion and showed numerous or continuous discharges of slow spike-waves. All the patients had received other injections of benzodiazepine with little effect, and all except one had already had episodes of tonic status. The brief delay between the injection and the appearance of seizures, the absence of clinical or EEG sleep at the time, and the temporal evolution of the tonic seizures after the injection of benzodiazepine: all these features exclude the possibility that the seizures were caused by sleep.

TL;DR: The implantation takes place at a moment when the concentration of receptor is very low, suggesting that implantation is controlled by progesterone secreted previously (perhaps in the pre-ovulatory period).
Abstract: The concentration of the progesterone cytosol receptor in the uterus shows marked variations during the estrus cycle. It is maximum in proestrus (about 40,000 binding sites per cell) and falls progressively during estrus and postestrus to attain a 16-fold lower value in diestrus. The receptor has a sedimentation coefficient (measured by sucrose gradient centrifugation) of 6.7 S during proestrus. In estrus, 6.7 S and 4.5 S binders are present, and the 4.5 S binder is predominant in postestrus and finally found exclusively in diestrus. One cannot differentiate 3 and 7 day pregnant animals by the concentration and the sedimentation coefficient of the progesterone receptors from the corresponding non-pregnant guinea pigs. Thus the implantation takes place at a moment when the concentration of receptor is very low, suggesting that implantation is controlled by progesterone secreted previously (perhaps in the pre-ovulatory period). The concentration of progesterone receptor in the uterus is positively controlle...

Abstract: IT is now accepted that two classes of lymphocytes are present within the peripheral lymphoid tissues of the mammal: thymus-derived lymphocytes (T cells) and thymus-independent, bone-marrow-derived lymphocytes (B cells). So far much use has been made of isoantigenic markers on T cells to differentiate them from B cells1–5; markers which can be used on B cells are more recent6.

TL;DR: The effects of intragastric and intravenous ethanol administration on exocrine secretion of human pancreas were studied and ethanol administration substantially reduced volume, concentration and output of bicarbonates, lipase and chymotrypsin.
Abstract: The effects of intragastric and intravenous ethanol administration on exocrine secretion of human pancreas were studied in 15 subjects. By either route, ethanol administration substantially reduced volume, concentration and output of bicarbonates, lipase and chymotrypsin. This action is interpreted as direct inhibition of the pancreas by ethanol. However, calcium concentration in duodenal juice increased with intragastric ethanol administration and decreased with intravenous ethanol administration.

TL;DR: The proposed technique meets the necessary requirements for measuring receptor concentration in various physiological situations where endogenous progesterone varie...
Abstract: The concentration of progesterone receptor sites in uterine cytosol can be measured by microcolumn Sephadex G-25 chromatography under very strict experimental conditions. The ligand concentration must be kept in the 0.1–10 nM range and the protein concentration must be sufficiently low (=1 mg/ml) to minimize nonspecific binding. Under these conditions the saturation of the receptor is obtained and its apparent affinity for progesterone (K = 1.5 109 M1 at 0 C) and the binding sites concentration can be measured. When endogenous progesterone is present the technique can be used providing the time of incubation is shown to allow complete exchange between endogenous unlabelled and exogenous radioactive ligand. The apparent affinity for radioactive progesterone is then decreased but the concentration of the binding sites can still be measured. The proposed technique thus meets the necessary requirements for measuring receptor concentration in various physiological situations where endogenous progesterone varie...

TL;DR: The measurement of the rate of production and secretion of cortisol and cortisone by this method was shown to be impossible as evidenced by paradoxical results.
Abstract: Nine normal subjects (four men and five women), three patients with Cushing's syndrome, and three hyperthyroid females were given a constant infusion of 3H-cortisol and 14C-cortisone. In normal subjects the MCR of cortisone, 451 ± 79 (sd) L/m2/24 hr, was significantly greater than the MCR of cortisol, 155 ± 40 (sd) L/m2/24 hr. Both these clearances were increased in Cushing's syndrome and hyperthyroidism. In the normal subjects, the transfer constant measuring the conversion of cortisone into cortisol (ρ) 85 ± 8.5 (sd)% was significantly greater than that measuring the conversion of cortisol into cortisone (ρ) 60 ± 4.6 (sd)%, and was decreased in hyperthyroidism explaining the augmented urinary THE. The measurement of the rate of production and secretion of cortisol and cortisone by this method was shown to be impossible as evidenced by paradoxical results. The absence of a steady state in the production of cortisol did not appear to be the only cause of difficulty. The possibility that, when the...
