TL;DR: In this article, a biographical overview of Leon Theremin and his works is presented together with a concept of a wireless musical instrument named RFID-vox, which combines basic principles of the thereminvox with passive UHF RFID sensor technology.
Abstract: This chapter is dedicated to Leon Theremin, the inventor of the first passive RFID tag-like device, who is more widely known as an inventor of the contactless musical instrument known as the thereminvox. A biographical overview of Leon Theremin and his works is presented together with a concept of a wireless musical instrument named RFID-vox, which combines basic principles of the thereminvox with passive UHF RFID sensor technology.

TL;DR: In this paper, the previous design of an inductively-coupled feed for an RFID tag antenna is modified to realize a platform-tolerant characteristic, which comprises a microstrip patch.
Abstract: In this paper, the previous design of an inductively-coupled feed for an RFID tag antenna is modified to realize a platform-tolerant characteristic. In the new feed, parts of the feed line are connected directly to the radiating element to realize a platform-tolerant RFID tag antenna, which comprises a microstrip patch. Since there is a ground plane underneath the patch and the feedline, the performance of the tag is essentially independent of the surface upon which the tag is mounted. This desirable feature of the tag is confirmed by the measured results presented herein.

TL;DR: In this paper, a handheld scanning device, such as a pistol-type bar code reader, has a housing (4) having an outer shell (10) defining an interior space, and an outer opening (14) in the shell communicates with the space.
Abstract: A handheld scanning device, such as a pistol-type bar code reader, has a housing (4) having an outer shell (10) defining an interior space. An outer opening (14) in the shell communicates with the space. A tray (40) has an inner portion and an outer closure portion with a sealing surface. The inner portion is sized and shaped to be introducible into and removable from the interior space through the opening. The outer closure portion is dimensioned to close the opening when the inner portion is in the space. The sealing surface (62) sealingly engages an outer surface of the shell to protect the interior space and a component mounted on the inner portion from environmental contamination. The tray is easily removable from the device housing, and the component is easily demountable, to allow for quick and easy replacement of the component and/or tray. The closure portion may be provided with an access opening (50) for a memory card to provide an interface between the component and other elements of the device carried by the housing.

TL;DR: In this article, a new passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag antenna for the ultra-high frequancy band is proposed, which consists of a modified inductive feed and a radiating slotted copper trace (SCT).
Abstract: A new passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag antenna for the ultrahigh frequancy band is proposed. It consists of a modified inductive feed and a radiating slotted copper trace (SCT). A ground plane is used in the design to make the tag antenna platform-tolerant. The radiating SCT is investigated first, and its return loss, antenna efficiency and radiation pattern characteristics are studied. The read range, differential radar cross section, input impedance and current distribution of the RFID tag that employs the SCT antenna are simulated, and reasonably a good agreement between the simulated and measured results is obtained.
