Abstract: Understanding what farmers need in potato varieties and assessing available genetic resources at the farmer and district levels is important for the conservation and improvement of potato in Ethiopia. A survey was conducted in six major potato growing districts representing different agro-ecologies, cropping systems, market outlets, and levels of new variety adoption. Seventy to ninety percent of the farmers surveyed reported growing two or more potato varieties; some farmers reported growing up to five. The greatest diversity at the district level (up to 10 potato varieties) was recorded at Gumer & Geta where there is better access to new varieties while the lowest diversity was reported in districts with low access to new cultivars. The distribution of varieties differed among agro-ecologies as did the traits that farmers were most concerned with, such as drought tolerance, late blight resistance, yield potential, marketability, food value, storage quality, adaptation to low soil fertility, time to maturity and suitability for multiple harvesting. Farmers’ decision-making processes and external factors that influence potato variety diversity were also documented. The registration of predominant local varieties and use of these local varieties as a starting point for the development of improved varieties are some of the recommendations for future potato breeding in Ethiopia. Moreover, it is necessary to consider variations in agro-ecologies, cropping systems and market outlets in the process of developing varieties suitable for farmers’ and consumers’ real needs.

Abstract: True potato seed (TPS) may be an alternative method of potato production in developing countries. A breeding method for the sexual propagation of this vegetatively propagated crop should consider the development of parental lines and the type of cultivar to be released. Open-pollinated (OP) cultivars seem to be an inexpensive procedure to produce potato from true seed. However, OP progenies are the result of selfing and outcrossing in male-fertile tetraploid potatoes. The aim of the present research was to establish the effect of inbreeding and open pollination in TPS. Ten Andigena clones were used as parental material to derive hybrid (S0), inbred (S1 and S2), and open-pollinated (OP1 and OP2) generations. Significant differences among generations were found for pollen production, pollen viability (as determined by its stainability with aceto-carmine glycerol), number of flowers and berries plant-1, number of seeds berry-1, weight of 1000 seeds, and tuber yield plant-1. The parental populations were significantly different for most of the traits, but not for flower production and berry weight. The interaction of population ×generation was significant for pollen and seed production as well as for weight for 1000 seeds. All the traits evaluated except seed weight showed a strong inbreeding depression, while the OP progenies had intermediate values between the S0 and the S1. This demonstrates that open pollination in potatoes is not exclusively the product of selfing; it also results from outcrossing.

Abstract: The crop models that are distributed with DSSAT version 3 permit the simulation of long-term cropping sequences. This added capability enhances the value of crop growth models as a tool for analyzing the long-term consequences of management practices on a site-specific basis. The models can be used to predict changes and detect trends in biophysical indicators such as crop yield, nitrogen uptake, soil carbon levels, and nitrate leaching. In this way, management practices that are potentially sustainable or unsustainable can be identified. In the systems approach to research, simulation tools remain in constant need of critical evaluation and refinement. The models, which currently provide reasonable simulation of single-season processes, require a better understanding of long-term soil processes and how these processes are affected by management.

Abstract: In Africa, average sweetpotato storage root yields are low and breeding is considered to be an important factor in increasing production. The objectives of this study were to obtain variance component estimations for sweetpotato in this region of the world and then use these to determine the efficiency of variety trials and breeding systems. From an incomplete series of variety trials in Kenya and Uganda (comprising 15 genotypes, three locations, two crop durations and three seasons) variance components were estimated - using the REML method - for the following traits: storage root yield, biomass production, harvest index, storage root dry matter and the Elston index which was used to aggregate all four traits. The storage root yield of clones across all 12 environments ranged from 15.2 to 33.0 t/ha. The variance components were significant for all traits, except the genotype by season interactions for storage root dry matter. The efficiency of selection systems was determined for total test capacities of 450 and 900 plots and using not more than five locations. Two-stage selection was 17-81% more efficient than one-stage selection after two seasons of testing. Two-stage selection was optimized under the restriction of using at least two locations at step 1. Trials with two locations and one replication at step 1 and five locations and two replications at step 2 were appropriate both for selecting for storage root yield and for simultaneously selecting for storage root yield, biomass production, harvest index and storage root dry matter content by using the Elston index. There are indications that such an allocation of resources for breeding sweetpotato is also appropriate for other regions in Sub-Saharan Africa.
