TL;DR: In this article, a quasi-static uncoupled theory of thermal stresses based on the time-fractional heat conduction equation is considered, and the Caputo fractional derivative of order α is used.
Abstract: A quasi-static uncoupled theory of thermal stresses based on the time-fractional heat conduction equation is considered. The Caputo fractional derivative of order α is used. The fundamental solutions to the Cauchy problems as well as to the source problem are studied in the case of spherical symmetry, and corresponding thermal stresses are investigated. The solutions are obtained using the Laplace transform with respect to time and the sin-Fourier transform with respect to radial coordinate. For 1 < α < 2 the proposed theory interpolates the classical theory of thermoelasticty and that without energy dissipation introduced by Green and Naghdi. The numerical results for the temperature and stress distributions are presented graphically for various values of order of fractional derivative.

TL;DR: In this article, a review of the possibilities and limitations of using starch as a packaging material is presented, and special attention is paid to more or less environmentally friendly methods of improving its processing properties.
Abstract: Starch is the second most abundantly available natural polymer in the world, after cellulose. If we add its biodegradability and non-toxicity to the natural environment, it becomes a raw material very attractive for the food and non-food industries. However, in the latter case, mainly due to the high hydrophilicity of starch, it is necessary to carry out many more or less complex operations and processes. One of the fastest growing industries in the last decade is the processing of biodegradable materials for packaging purposes. This is mainly due to awareness of producers and consumers about the dangers of unlimited production and the use of non-degradable petroleum polymers. Therefore, in the present review, an attempt was made to show the possibilities and limitations of using starch as a packaging material. The most important physicochemical features of this biopolymer are discussed, and special attention is paid to more or less environmentally friendly methods of improving its processing properties.

TL;DR: The results are the most convincing ever demonstration of the capability of the SDE for practical-scale enantiopurification as comparable, or even superior for some systems, to that of recrystallization.
Abstract: We report the best performance yet for the self-disproportionation of enantiomers (SDE) via achiral chromatography as typically used in laboratories for the isolated yield of the excess enantiomer using N-acetyl β-amino acid ethyl esters. The results are the most convincing ever demonstration of the capability of the SDE for practical-scale enantiopurification as comparable, or even superior for some systems, to that of recrystallization. For example, from a sample of 94.4 % ee, a yield of 71 % of enantiopure material was isolated in a single chromatographic run. Moreover, the lack of an esoteric structural entity, e.g. strongly polarizing groups, such as, for instance CF3, highlights the fact that the phenomenon is not dependent on the presence of such and thus the process is relevant to any usual-type structure. In contrast to recrystallization, the procedure is predictable, general, and dependable, boding well for its widespread application in routine laboratory settings.

TL;DR: A variety of techniques for bioaugmentation and biostimulation have been compiled and summarized in this chapter and some examples of new approaches are presented.
Abstract: Contamination of soils with oil hydrocarbons is currently an important worldwide issue. Among all the available remediation methods, bioremediation is widely considered to be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach. For bioremediation to be effective, the overall rate of intrinsic biodegradation and subsequent removal of hydrocarbons must be accelerated, which can be done through biostimulation and bioaugmentation. A variety of techniques for bioaugmentation and biostimulation have been compiled and summarized in this chapter. The evaluation of the potentials to use such treatments to enhance biodegradation rates in oil hydrocarbon contaminated soil is provided, including some recent works from the author’s laboratory. Factors that may enhance biodegradation of oil hydrocarbons in soil are discussed in detail, and finally some examples of new approaches are presented.
