Abstract: The search for novel pharmacotherapy from medicinal plants for central nervous system (CNS) disorders has become of importance since new agents with improved efficacy for more effective therapy are required. Sesamum indicum has been extensively used in Bangladesh and other Indian Subcontinent as medication for various diseases including CNS disorders. It was found to have antioxidant, antitumor, antihypertensive, neuroprotective, hypoglycemic, antimicrobial, anticonvulsant and wound healing activity. The result showed robust and dose-dependent antidepressant-like activity. There are statistically significant (p* < 0.05) reductions in the duration of immobility time both in forced swimming and tail suspension test. In open field test, measurement of locomotion, defecation and rearing are evaluated. There is statistically significant (p* < 0.05) increase in locomotion, rearing and defecation of mice compared to control group. These results clearly demonstrates that methanolic extract of the seeds of Sesamum indicum has potential antidepressant activity and further studies should be conducted to identify, isolate and evaluate its potential active compound responsible for such effect.

Abstract: We investigated and compared leaching processes with different acids for the recovery of cobalt from the cathode active materials of spent lithium-ion batteries. The active substances separated from the cathode of spent lithium-ion batteries were dissolved in each acid solutions, and precipitated as CoC2O4•2H2O. The structural morphology of the cathode materials before and after leaching were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The amount of Co present in the leachate was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). The experimental study shows that 93% of Co (mass fraction) can be dissolved in the solution of 1.5 M HCl, 2.0% H2O2 (volume fraction), and S:L of 20 g/L−1 results the highest efficient recovery within 60 min at 90°C comparing other acids in this study.

Abstract: Objective: Understanding intraspecific phenotypic plasticity is a prerequisite to fish stock identifi¬cation and sustainable fisheries management. In this study, we assessed intraspecific phenotypic plasticity in terms of meristic and morphometric characters of wild populations of elongate glassy perchlet, Chanda nama from two different rivers, namely Madhumati River – Narail (MRN) and Tulshiganga River – Jaypurhat (TRJ), and an ox-bow lake, Jhapa Baor – Jashore (JBJ) in Bangladesh.
Materials and Methods: In this study, six meristics, 15 conventional morphometrics, and 23-truss-based morphometrics were subjected to a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the Tukey-HSD test. The mean values of three meristic counts and nine conventional and 12 truss-based morphometrics demonstrated significant differences in the ANOVA test. Furthermore, principal component analysis (PCA) and discrimination function analysis (DFA) were performed separately using conventional and truss-based morphometric data.
Results: In PCA analysis, four principal components were extracted and cumulatively demon¬strated 51.848%. On the contrary, two discriminant functions (DF1, 63.5%; DF2, 36.5%) resulted from DFA analysis. In the bi-plot alignment from the discriminant space, all individuals were exceedingly separated among the three inhabitants. A dendrogram developed using conventional and truss morphometric characters confirmed that two clusters were formed among three pop¬ulations. The TRJ population formed a distinct cluster, and the JBJ population formed a different cluster with a subcluster of MRN. In the discriminant function analysis, precise classification out¬comes displayed 82% of individuals into their unique populations, whereas 66.9% of individuals were categorized as a cross-validated assemblage.
Conclusion: The baseline information resulting from the current study would be useful for envi¬ronmental studies and further conservation of glassy perchlet populations in Bangladesh.

Abstract: L-Cysteine coated zinc oxide (ZnO) nano hollow spheres were prepared as a potent drug delivery agent to eradicate Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. typhimurium). The ZnO nano hollow spheres were synthesized by following the environmentally-friendly trisodium citrate assisted method and L-cysteine (L-Cys) conjugate with its surface. ZnO/L-Cys@CFX nanocarrier drug has been fabricated by incorporating ceftizoxime with L-Cys coated ZnO nano hollow spheres and characterized using different techniques such as scanning electron microscope (SEM), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) etc. Furthermore, the drug-loading and encapsulation efficiency at different pH levels was measured using UV-vis spectrometer and optimized. A control and gradual manner of pH-sensitive release profile was found after investigating the release profile of CFX from the carrier drug. The antibacterial activity of ZnO/L-Cys@CFX and CFX were evaluated through the agar disc diffusion method and the broth dilution method, which indicate the antibacterial properties of antibiotics enhance after conjugating. Surprisingly, the ZnO/L-Cys@CFX exhibits a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 5 µg/ml against S. typhimurium is lower than CFX (20 µg/ml) itself. These results indicate the nanocarrier can reduce the amount of CFX dosed to eradicate S. typhimurium.
