TL;DR: The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed RISE metric is superior to the relevant state-of-the-art methods for evaluating both synthetic and real blurring and the proposed metric is robust, which means that it has very good generalization ability.
Abstract: The human visual system exhibits multiscale characteristic when perceiving visual scenes. The hierarchical structures of an image are contained in its scale space representation, in which the image can be portrayed by a series of increasingly smoothed images. Inspired by this, this paper presents a no-reference and robust image sharpness evaluation (RISE) method by learning multiscale features extracted in both the spatial and spectral domains. For an image, the scale space is first built. Then sharpness-aware features are extracted in gradient domain and singular value decomposition domain, respectively. In order to take into account the impact of viewing distance on image quality, the input image is also down-sampled by several times, and the DCT-domain entropies are calculated as quality features. Finally, all features are utilized to learn a support vector regression model for sharpness prediction. Extensive experiments are conducted on four synthetically and two real blurred image databases. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed RISE metric is superior to the relevant state-of-the-art methods for evaluating both synthetic and real blurring. Furthermore, the proposed metric is robust, which means that it has very good generalization ability.

TL;DR: The experimental results show that IR-SSIM is better correlated with subjective evaluations than existing methods in the literature and embeds it into a multi-operator image retargeting process, which generates visually appealing retargeted results.
Abstract: We propose an objective quality assessment method for image retargeting. The key step in our approach is to generate a structural similarity (SSIM) map that indicates at each spatial location in the source image how the structural information is preserved in the retargeted image. A spatial pooling method employing both bottom-up and top-down visual saliency estimations is then applied to provide an overall evaluation of the retargeted image. To evaluate the performance of the proposed IR-SSIM algorithm, we created an image database that contains images produced by different retargeting algorithms and carried out subjective tests to assess the quality of the retargeted images. Our experimental results show that IR-SSIM is better correlated with subjective evaluations than existing methods in the literature. To further demonstrate the advantages and potential applications of IR-SSIM, we embed it into a multi-operator image retargeting process, which generates visually appealing retargeting results.

TL;DR: An eco-risk index was established by the combination of a landscape disturbance index with a landscape fragmentation index to explore the ecological risk characteristics of land use change in the Poyang Lake Eco-economic Zone of China and can provide some useful information for land eco-management, eco-environmental harnessing and restoration.
Abstract: Land use/land cover change has been attracting increasing attention in the field of global environmental change research because of its role in the social and ecological environment. To explore the ecological risk characteristics of land use change in the Poyang Lake Eco-economic Zone of China, an eco-risk index was established in this study by the combination of a landscape disturbance index with a landscape fragmentation index. Spatial distribution and gradient difference of land use eco-risk are analyzed by using the methods of spatial autocorrelation and semivariance. Results show that ecological risk in the study area has a positive correlation, and there is a decreasing trend with the increase of grain size both in 1995 and 2005. Because the area of high eco-risk value increased from 1995 to 2005, eco-environment quality declined slightly in the study area. There are distinct spatial changes in the concentrated areas with high land use eco-risk values from 1995 to 2005. The step length of spatial separation of land use eco-risk is comparatively long — 58 km in 1995 and 11 km in 2005 — respectively. There are still nonstructural factors affecting the quality of the regional ecological environment at some small-scales. Our research results can provide some useful information for land eco-management, eco-environmental harnessing and restoration. In the future, some measures should be put forward in the regions with high eco-risk value, which include strengthening land use management, avoiding unreasonable types of land use and reducing the degree of fragmentation and separation.

TL;DR: In this article, the Baron and Kenny approach was used to test the mediating effects of organizational commitment and leader-member exchange (LMX) in linking organizational justice and work performance.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop and test a model that identifies the impact of organizational justice on work performance. The model examined the mediating role played by organizational commitment and leader‐member exchange (LMX) in linking organizational justice and work performance.Design/methodology/approach – The data were collected from 793 completed questionnaires sampling employees from industries across the People's Republic of China. The questionnaire included scales to measure organizational justice, organizational commitment, LMX, and work performance. The measurement of constructs and the hypothesized relationships among variables were assessed by the use of structural equation modeling. The Baron and Kenny approach was used to test the mediating effects.Findings – First, the relationship of organizational justice to work performance was mostly indirect, mediated by organizational commitment and LMX. Second, among the three kinds of organizational justice, interactional justi...

TL;DR: The findings underscore the needs to reduce public or societal discrimination against rural-to-urban migrants to fully benefit from the urban economic development, and to create a positive atmosphere to improve migrant’s psychological well-being.
Abstract: Status-based discrimination and inequity have been associated with the process of migration, especially with economics-driven internal migration. However, their association with mental health among economy-driven internal migrants in developing countries is rarely assessed. This study examines discriminatory experiences and perceived social inequity in relation to mental health status among rural-to-urban migrants in China. Cross-sectional data were collected from 1,006 rural-to-urban migrants in 2004–2005 in Beijing, China. Participants reported their perceptions and experiences of being discriminated in daily life in urban destination and perceived social inequity. Mental health was measured using the symptom checklist-90 (SCL-90). Multivariate analyses using general linear model were performed to test the effect of discriminatory experience and perceived social inequity on mental health. Experience of discrimination was positively associated with male gender, being married at least once, poorer health status, shorter duration of migration, and middle range of personal income. Likewise, perceived social inequity was associated with poorer health status, higher education attainment, and lower personal income. Multivariate analyses indicate that both experience of discrimination and perceived social inequity were strongly associated with mental health problems of rural-to-urban migrants. Experience of discrimination in daily life and perceived social inequity have a significant influence on mental health among rural-to-urban migrants. The findings underscore the needs to reduce public or societal discrimination against rural-to-urban migrants, to eliminate structural barriers (i.e., dual household registrations) for migrants to fully benefit from the urban economic development, and to create a positive atmosphere to improve migrant’s psychological well-being.
