TL;DR: In this article, the Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity of P-type semiconductor alloy compacts of the composition (Bi2Te3)25-(Sb2Te 3)75 with grain size (L) in the range 30 > L > 20 μm, 20 > L < 15 μm and L < 5 μm were prepared by cold press at a pressure of 77 × 107 Nm−2.
Abstract: P-type semiconductor alloy compacts of the composition (Bi2Te3)25-(Sb2Te3)75 with grain size (L) in the range 30 > L > 20 μm, 20 > L > 15 μm, 15 > L > 10 μm, 10 > L > 5 and L < 5 μm were prepared by cold press at a pressure of 77 × 107 Nm−2. The samples were sintered at 673 K. Measurements of the Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity were carried out. The experimental results show that the Seebeck coefficient increases, but not much from the single crystal. The electrical resistivity increases in particular for the size L < 5 μm with a reduction in grain size. The total thermal conductivity seriously decreases as grain size decreases. It is concluded that the figure of merit of the compacted alloy would be significantly improved through the use of fine-grained powders of size 30−10 μm.

Abstract: Hydroximoyl chlorides 3 react with acrylonitrile, N-arylmaleimide and maleic anhydride to give isoxazolines 5, pyrrolidino[3,4-d]isoxazolines 8, and furolidino[3,4-d]isoxazolines 9, respectively. 3 reacted with 2-aminopyridine, 2-aminopyrimidine, o-phenylenediamine and o-aminothiophenol to yield 3-ni-trosoimidazo[1,2-α]pyridines 20, 3-nitrosopyrimidines 22, 3-naphthoyl-1,4-dihydrobenzo-1,2,4-triazines 24, and 3-naphthoyl-4H-1,3,4-benzothiadiazine 27, respectively. Compound 3 reacted with benzoylacetonitrile, acetoacetanilide, thiophenol, benzencsulfinic acid in ethanolic sodium ethoxide solution to give the corresponding isoxazoles 12–13 and oximes 16–17, respectively. The structures of these products were confirmed by elemental analyses, spectral data and, wherever possible, alternative synthesis.

TL;DR: The maximum (minimum) nonlinear programming method is used to derive the upper (lower) bound of the α-cut representation of fuzzy sets, subject to the interval of theα- cut representation for functions of fuzzy numbers.
Abstract: Dong and Wong (1987) showed that the discretization method of Schmucker(1984) can give quite irregular and incorrect membership functions. The method of Dubois and Prade (1980) requires that the function be increasing over the solution space; and the nonlinear programming method of Baas and Kwakernaak (1977), although exact, requires very restrictive conditions, and its implementation is cumbersome except for the simplest algebraic functions. Therefore, the aim of the paper is to propose a general and easy computational method for functions of fuzzy numbers. We use the maximum (minimum) nonlinear programming method to derive the upper (lower) bound of the α-cut representation of fuzzy sets. Our nonlinear programming problem is to maximize (minimize) the combination of functions of fuzzy numbers, subject to the interval of the α-cut representation for functions of fuzzy numbers. The method has been implemented in a GINO package, and its results are general and efficient

TL;DR: In this article, a high-resolution digital elevation model is used to characterize each point in the model according to an approximate relative-visibility metric, which can be used to determine key terrain, siting of probable defensive positions, and identification of highly concealed avenues of approach flow from examination of the resulting visibility model.
Abstract: Terrain analysis in support of planned military training or operations in a task which requires considerably training, skill, and experience. Military planners must synthesize knowledge of both their own and their expected adversary's tactics, weapons systems, and probable courses of action to determine key terrain, those portions of the terrain surface which have the most impact on the conduct of tactical operations. Many attributes of the actual terrain influence terrain analyses. These include elevation, intervisibility, vegetation cover, transportation networks, waterways, trafficability, soil types, and others. In some important areas of the world, the large set of attributes that influence terrain analysis is greatly reduced. Desert areas comprise one such areal class. As an example, a high resolution digital elevation model is sufficient to support most terrain analysis efforts for platoon and company operations in the US Marine Corps' dismounted infantry training area at 29 Palms, California. The digital elevation model allows an analysis to characterize each point in the model according to an approximate relative-visibility metric. Determination of key terrain, siting of probable defensive positions, and identification of highly concealed avenues of approach flow from examination of the resulting visibility model. These tactically significant areas can be used to conduct operations planning, perform DEM resolution studies, or help determine selective fidelity parameters for TIN modeling purposes.© (1995) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. TL;DR: In this paper, thin films of biocompatible materials such as hydroxylapatite (HA) - Ca10 (PO4)6(OH)2 were created on Ti substrates by KrF laser.
Abstract: Thin films of biocompatible materials such as hydroxylapatite (HA) - Ca10 (PO4)6(OH)2 were deposited by laser ablation technique. The films of HA were created on Ti substrates by KrF laser. The layers were deposited in vacuum, in pure H2O vapors (pressure 2 X 10-3 mbar - 2 X 10-1 mbar), and in Ar/H2O vapor mixture. Influence of laser energy density ET (3 Jcm-2, 13 Jcm-2) and substrate temperature Tg (500 degree(s)C - 760 degree(s)C) on the film parameters was studied. Two different technological processes were used for HA target preparation. Films and targets were characterized by Rutherford backscattering analysis (RBS), particle induced x-ray emission (PIXE), x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and by Knoop microhardness and scratch test. The best crystalline HA films were reached in the mixture of Ar/H2O. Higher Tg had to be used for such deposition. Higher Tg was also preferable from the point of film microhardness. Adhesion of films to the substrates in the range of tens of Newtons was measured. The preliminary results of in vitro experiments of films biotolerance and resorbability are also presented.© (1995) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Abstract: The incompatibilities in a powder mixture for the manufacture of a chewable direct compression antiplague tablet preparate, were studied. The degree of loss of chlorhexi-dine diacetate in the presence of some common tablet exci-pients was studied under high relative humidity (80 % RH) and in water solution. The most significant losses in water solution were observed with lubricants magnesium stearate and sodium lauryl sulphate. Under high relative humidity the greatest losses were, on the contrary, observed with the materials having a great water absorption capacity, such as sodium carboxy-methylcellulose and sodium starch glycolate.

Abstract: High spin levels in119Te have been populated following the96Zr (30Si, α 3n)119Te reaction at a beam energy of 135 MeV. The subsequentγ-ray deexcitation was studied usingγ-ray spectroscopic methods. New levels and several spin and parity assignments up toJ π=55/2− were established. The decay scheme at high-spin exhibits single-particle characteristics associated with the fully aligned ν(h11/2)3 π(g7/2)2 configuration for the 39/2− level, while the 55/2− level could be interpreted as fully aligned π(d5/2)2 ν h 11 2/5 g 7 2/−2 ) configuration.

TL;DR: Applications of the wavelet transform are discussed including nondestructive testing of materials, biomedical applications in the analysis of EEG signals, and interference excision in spread spectrum communication systems.
Abstract: In recent years there has been a great deal of interest in the use of wavelets to supplement or replace conventional Fourier transform signal processing. This paper provides a review of wavelet transforms for signal processing applications, and discusses several emerging applications which benefit from the advantages of wavelets. The wavelet transform can be implemented as an acousto-optic correlator; perfect reconstruction of digital signals may also be achieved using acousto-optic finite impulse response filter banks. Acousto-optic image correlators are discussed as a potential implementation of the wavelet transform, since a 1D wavelet filter bank may be encoded as a 2D image. We discuss applications of the wavelet transform including nondestructive testing of materials, biomedical applications in the analysis of EEG signals, and interference excision in spread spectrum communication systems. Computer simulations and experimental results for these applications are also provided.© (1995) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. TL;DR: The U.S. Military Academy has developed an instructional program that familiarizes every student with principles of laser operation and provides undergraduate research opportunities in optics for electrical engineering majors and others.
Abstract: In meeting the growing demand for graduates who have background in optical engineering, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Photonics Research Center at the U.S. Military Academy have jointly developed an instructional program that familiarizes every student with principles of laser operation and provides undergraduate research opportunities in optics for electrical engineering majors and others. The program includes a series of laboratory demonstrations in the Photonics Research Center for students in all majors during their sophomore year. For electrical engineering majors, the program also offers a senior level photonics engineering course, advanced individual study in laser applications, and a variety of capstone design projects. Advanced individual study may include up to three semesters of experimental research similar to masters degree thesis work in a graduate program, while the capstone project is accomplished in one semester by design teams based on the design-build- test methodology. Both types of projects address real-world requirements specified by faculty advisors or external mentors. Our integrated approach to optics education supports ongoing state-of-the-art research in the Photonics Research Center and provides technically qualified graduates to meet the demands of the field Army of the 21st century.

Abstract: The electromagnetic scattering from a spherical-circular microstrip antenna is analyzed using a full-wave analysis incorporating Galerkin's moment method. The radar cross sections (RCSs) are calculated in this study and compared with the corresponding results for the planar circular microstrip antenna. Numerical results for various curvature radii and substrate thicknesses are presented and discussed. TL;DR: In this article, the effectiveness of two preparations used as photosensitizers in the photodynamic method for neoplasm treatment was examined, and the results showed that PP(Phen)2Arg2 destroyed Sarcoma L1 much more effectively than the conventionally used mixture of hematoporphyrin derivatives, customarily named HpD.
Abstract: The effectiveness of two preparations used as photosensitizers in the photodynamic method for neoplasm treatment was examined. The material consisted of Balb/c strain mice with transplanted lung sarcoma, Sarcoma L1. Arginine derivative HpDArg2 (hematoporphyrin derivatives -- arginine) and PP(Phen2Arg2, i.e., 1-arginine di(N- phenylalanyl) protoporphyrinate, were used as photosensitizers. Animals were administered the photosensitizer in a dose of 10 mg/kg body weight. After 24 hrs they were irradiated with He-Ne laser; total energy of 150 J/cm2 was applied in three portions of 50 J/cm2 each, at 24-h intervals. The results showed that PP(Phen)2Arg2 destroyed Sarcoma L1 much more effectively than the conventionally used mixture of hematoporphyrin derivatives, customarily named HpD.© (1995) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Abstract: A resonance-complex set was developed to investigate the process of combination of hydrogen atoms with a modified resonance-complex theory and Monte-Carlo trajectory method over the temperature range 40-300 K. The obtained ratios of ortho to para at 300 K and at 77 K agree satisfactorily with experimental results. Unlike previous results, a maximum of the rate coefficient as a function of temperature is found near 150 K.

TL;DR: In this paper, a novel geometry of a spherical-circular microstrip antenna gap-coupled with an annular-ring parasitic patch is studied, and a rigorous Green's function formulation in the spectral domain and a Galerkin's moment method calculation are applied.
Abstract: Various characteristics of a single spherical microstrip antenna have been rigorously analyzed using a full-wave approach. The coupling problem between two spherical microstrip antennas, however, is not addressed. A novel geometry of a spherical-circular microstrip antenna gap-coupled with an annular-ring parasitic patch is studied. By choosing a gap spacing between the circular disk and the annular-ring patch to be about one substrate thickness or less, it is expected that the antenna bandwidth of the spherical-circular microstrip antenna can be increased. To study this problem, a rigorous Green's function formulation in the spectral domain and a Galerkin's moment method calculation are applied. The input impedance at the driven circular disk is formulated and calculated, and the results for the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) are presented. The antenna bandwidth determined by a VSWR /spl les/2.0, is then discussed.
