TL;DR: The authors address the problem of estimating the average power dissipated in VLSI combinational and sequential circuits, under random input sequences, by presenting methods to probabilistically estimate switching activity in sequential circuits.
Abstract: The authors address the problem of estimating the average power dissipated in VLSI combinational and sequential circuits, under random input sequences. Switching activity is strongly affected by gate delays and for this reason a general delay model is used in estimating switching activity. The method takes into account correlation caused at internal gates in the circuit due to reconvergence of input signals. In sequential circuits, the input sequence applied to the combinational portion of the circuit is highly correlated because some of the inputs to the combinational logic are flip-flop outputs representing the state of the circuit. Methods are presented to probabilistically estimate switching activity in sequential circuits. These methods automatically compute the switching rates and correlations between flip-flop outputs. >

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a laser cutting apparatus which allows cutting to be automatically restarted or redone without intervention from an operator once a cutting error or fault occurs, based on the type or definition of the fault.
Abstract: A laser cutting apparatus which allows cutting to be automatically restarted or redone without intervention from an operator once a cutting error or fault occurs. In a first embodiment, when the fault occurs the apparatus discontinues processing on the product corresponding to the fault. Thereafter, it moves to, and restarts cutting at, a starting position of the next product to be cut. In a second embodiment, the apparatus corrects a fault and continues cutting on the product corresponding to the fault by restarting cutting at the fault point. It determines whether a restart is possible at the point of the fault based on the type or definition of the fault. If a predetermined number of restarts are attempted at the point of fault without a successful restart, then the apparatus moves to a new start position. In another embodiment, the apparatus uses a profile sensor to prevent machine damage by sensing the position of the cutting head relative to the workpiece.

TL;DR: More than two phases can be found in gels consisting of copolymers of randomly distributed positively and negatively charged groups as discussed by the authors, and the existence of these phases presumably reflects the ability of macromolecular systems to adopt different stable conformations in response to changes in environmental conditions.
Abstract: SYNTHETIC polymer gels are known to exist in two phases, swollen and collapsed1,2. Volume transitions may occur between the phases either continuously or discontinuously. We report here that more than two phases can be found in gels consisting of copolymers of randomly distributed positively and negatively charged groups. In these gels, polymer segments interact with each other through attractive or repulsive electrostatic interactions and through hydrogen bonding. It is the combination of these forces that seems to result in the existence of several phases. Each phase is characterized by a distinct degree of swelling, with abrupt jumps between them. The number of phases depends on the proportions of positively and negatively charged monomers, and decreases from a maximum of seven to just one for pure cationic or anionic gel compositions. The existence of these phases presumably reflects the ability of macromolecular systems to adopt different stable conformations in response to changes in environmental conditions.

TL;DR: In this paper, a non-contact IC card includes a data transmitting/receiving device, a memory, a CPU, a first determining device, and a second determining device.
Abstract: A non-contact IC card include a data transmitting/receiving device, a memory, a CPU, a first determining device, a second determining device, and a stopping device. When the data transmitting/receiving device receives a request signal, the first determining device determines whether first system identification information stored in the memory agrees with second system identification information contained in the request signal. At the same time, the second determining device determines whether use of the IC card indicated by use authorization information stored in the memory is authorized. When the first and second system identification information do not agree or when the use authorization information indicates that use of the IC card is not authorized, the stopping device stops the operation of the CPU until the next request signal is received.

TL;DR: In this article, a text similarity matching device judges similarity of input and database analysis networks on the basis of agreements of words, word pairs, and lines, and a text search system stores texts and complementary term lists prepared therefrom in respective databases.
Abstract: A text information extraction device extracts analysis networks from texts and stores them in a database. The analysis networks consist of lines each including elements and relations extracted from the texts. The analysis networks are complemented via synonym/near synonym/thesaurus process and via complementary template and the lines thereof are weighted via concept template. A text similarity matching device judges similarity of input and database analysis networks on the basis of agreements of words, word pairs, and lines. A text search system stores texts and complementary term lists prepared therefrom in respective databases. Queries are inputted in the form of analysis networks from which sets of keywords and relations are extracted. After searching the texts and complementary term lists stored in databases with respect to the keywords extracted from each input query, agreements of the sets of keywords and relations are determined.

TL;DR: In this paper, a surface mountable microwave IC package includes a dielectric substrate; a ground conductor disposed on a front surface of a dielectic substrate on which a microwave IC chip is disposed and grounded; and a transmission line for connecting the microwave IC IC chip to a coplanar line on a package substrate outside the microwaveIC package.
Abstract: A surface mountable microwave IC package includes a dielectric substrate; a ground conductor disposed on a front surface of a dielectric substrate on which a microwave IC chip is disposed and grounded; and a transmission line for connecting the microwave IC chip to a coplanar line on a package substrate outside the microwave IC package. The upper coplanar line is disposed on the front surface of the dielectric substrate and includes the ground conductor on which the IC chip is disposed. The lower coplanar line is disposed on the rear surface of the dielectric substrate. The intermediate coplanar line penetrates through the dielectric substrate and connects the upper coplanar line to the lower coplanar line. Therefore, the microwave transmission path from the package substrate to the IC chip is a coplanar transmission line so that a continuous transmission mode is maintained through the microwave transmission path. As a result, reflection of high frequency signals caused by the mismatching of characteristic impedances in the microwave transmission line is significantly reduced.

TL;DR: Hydrolytic degradation of PGA was found to proceed through a random chain scission and a by-product was produced, which seemed to be a polysaccharide.
Abstract: Poly(γ-glutamic acid) (PGA) production in Bacillus subtilis IF03335 was studied. When citric acid as a carbon source was added to a glutamic acid medium containing L-glutamic acid and ammonium sulfate, a large amount of pure PGA was produced. On the other hand, when glucose was added to the glutamic acid medium, a by-product was produced, which seemed to be a polysaccharide. Moreover, the mode of hydrolysis was investigated with PGA in aqueous solutions at 80, 100, and 120°C by monitoring the time-dependent changes in the molecular weights. Hydrolytic degradation of PGA was found to proceed through a random chain scission.

TL;DR: A 100-MHz two-dimensional discrete cosine transform core processor applicable to the real-time processing of HDTV signals is described, which features the fastest operating speed and the smallest area with sufficient accuracy to satisfy the specifications in CCITT recommendation H.261.
Abstract: A 100-MHz two-dimensional discrete cosine transform (DCT) core processor applicable to the real-time processing of HDTV signals is described. An excellent architecture utilizing a fast DCT algorithm and multiplier accumulators based on distributed arithmetic have contributed to reducing the hardware amount and to enhancing the speed performance. A layout scheme with a column-interleaved memory and a new ROM circuit are introduced for the efficient implementation of memory-based signal processing circuits. Furthermore, mean values of errors generated in the core were minimized to enhance the computational accuracy with the word-length constraints. Consequently, it features the fastest operating speed and the smallest area with sufficient accuracy to satisfy the specifications in CCITT recommendation H.261. The core integrates about 102 K transistors and occupies 21 mm/sup 2/ using 0.8- mu m double-metal CMOS technology. >

TL;DR: All of the variant cells released catecholamine and adenosine triphosphate in response to elevated intracellular concentrations of calcium, which suggests that synaptotagmin is not essential for secretion of catechollamine andAdenosine Triphosphates from PC12 cells.
Abstract: Synaptotagmin (p65) is an abundant synaptic vesicle protein of neurons and contains regions similar to the regulatory domain of protein kinase C. These domains are thought to be involved in calcium-dependent interaction with membrane phospholipids during exocytosis. To assess the functional role of synaptotagmin, synaptotagmin-deficient clonal variants of PC12 cells were isolated. All of the variant cells released catecholamine and adenosine triphosphate in response to elevated intracellular concentrations of calcium, which suggests that synaptotagmin is not essential for secretion of catecholamine and adenosine triphosphate from PC12 cells.
